PRODUCT EVALUATION: TERRADERMA FLAKK JAKKET, Fall Weather Jacket

(12/6/2005)
From time to time we take our ATVs into harsh riding conditions. The staffers here at Dirt Wheels as well as the countless ATV enthusiasts out there like to ride with protective gear, but want to avoid wearing heavy jackets when it’s hot and humid. We have been looking for something that would replace all the useless add-on weight of packing for a ride, as well as stepping away from the zip-up microwave oven. We have found it! The Terraderma Flakk Jakket allows you to leave the sweaters, sweatshirts and jackets at home.

(Left) The Terraderma Flakk Jakket is an ideal fall and winter riding jacket. It replaces the need of packing extra layers of clothing allowing you to step away from the zip-up microwave oven! (Right) The elbow, shoulder, and vertebrae pads are all removable. Only the two triangular chest pads are sewn into the jacket. You can replace the vertebrae pad with a water bladder from your hydration pack. Nice touch!

AN ATV TRAILRIDER’S DREAM
The idea for the Flakk Jakket came from riders who frequently travel to remote destinations to ride. Preparing for these trips can be a real pain. You have to pack a warm jacket, a rain slicker, a medium weight jacket, jerseys, and some sort of riding pads. That is just for your upper body! The Terraderma guys decided to make one jacket that would take the place of all those odds and ends. The Flakk Jakket was born.
The Flakk Jakket is like having three jackets and body armor all in one. The top layer is poly mesh fabric with ballistic nylon in the shoulders and elbows. The second layer is a removable quilted cotton/nylon mid-layer that also doubles as a medium weight jacket. It is zipped in or out of the outer shell so you can adjust the jacket for the climate you are riding in. Finally, the rain layer is breathable yet completely waterproof. All the seams of the rain layer are sealed with three-layer tape.

TAKING IT FOR A SPIN
The Flakk Jakket feels too small at first, but as soon as you get on your ride it seems made to fit. The Flakk Jakket can fit snugly because the armor is already in it. On your ATV, this snug fit pays off. The anatomically curved sleeves bend perfectly when your hands are on the grips, the cuffs are secured with a Velcro strap (there are also zippered vents in the cuff/sleeve area) and the pads stay in place mile after mile. The waist-length jacket doesn’t interfere with you one bit while you ride.
We found the Flakk Jakket to be as warm or as cool as we wanted it to be. If conditions were cold, the inner liner was left in. If conditions were warmer, we’d ride with only the mesh shell. It was best when we wore a thin-layered T-shirt or jersey underneath the Flakk Jakket.
The elbow, shoulder, and vertebrae pads are all removable. Only the two triangular chest pads are sewn in the jacket. You can replace the vertebrae pad with a water bladder from your hydration pack if you choose. Nice touch!
The only downside of the Flakk Jakket is that some people may find the styling to be really plain. The jacket only comes in black.

BUY IT?
The $149 Flakk Jakket is perfect for all types of riding in all types of weather. It does a lot more than take the hassle out of packing. Once you are on location, you are prepared for anything the trail is going to throw at you. No more regrets about leaving the rain gear or a warmer jacket behind. With the Flakk Jakket, you’ve got it all with you.
