q For the things kids are interested in, they learn quickly. Young ATVers will typically get the hang of riding their mini quad within a few quick lessons. Before long, they’re carving the trails with an impressive degree of skill. Eventually, they’ll reach the limitations of their mini quad and want a little more performance.
Mini quads for kids have to be designed for beginning riders with limited experience. This is fine, but kids grow quickly in both mind and body. They may outgrow their shoes every six months, but a parent can’t keep buying his kid a new quad at the same rate. Most young riders have to make do with their 90cc quad for a year or two more than they’d like.
To help kids be more content with their mini machines, there are a few things that can be done to improve its performance. A bigger piston, a clutch kit and better shocks are good upgrades that don’t break the bank. It is possible to make significant improvements with a budget of $250 to $500. We gathered up a selection of mini quad hop-up items to give you an idea of what’s available and for how much. The companies that specialize in performance parts for small ATVs cater to parents’ concerns and understand that price matters, so don’t be afraid to give them a call. Tell them that you’re a Dirt Wheels reader and they might even give you a “good-guy discount.”
