PRODUCT EVALUATION 2012 Fly racing f16 gear High on features, low on price

By the staff of Dirt Wheels

q Fly Racing has been around for a while now and has proven that a quality set of gear doesn’t have to cost a fortune. For 2012, they have continued this trend by introducing a new set of F16 gear that is priced to sell. The jersey ($29.95) is partially ventilated for all-season use and is made from a high-quality fabric blend. If it wasn’t for the soft feel and bright colors of the jersey, you wouldn’t know you were wearing it! Instead of a sewn-in tag, the jersey has a printed graphic showing the brand and size. It is long enough so that it doesn’t come untucked, but short enough so that it doesn’t bunch up in the pants. The cuffs are small and stay clear of your gloves and aren’t constrictive. If you want more venting, the limited-edition jersey offers more mesh panels than the others.

The F16 pants ($69.95) are lightweight yet durable and are made of mostly nylon, with stretch fabric in the crotch and knees. This allows plenty of room for knee braces. The hem on the pants sits just below mid-calf to prevent bunching in the boots. The waist closure is a simple ratchet type, with a secondary velcro adjuster on the side. The interior of the pant uses a mesh liner for breathability and a comfortable fit, and we didn’t experience any binding when wearing the gear.

The gloves ($19.95) fit snugly but allow for breathing room and have a comfortable fit and a nicely tailored wrist closure. A neoprene stretch panel covers the knuckles to ensure a tight but unrestrictive fit. The F16 gear is available in green, purple and yellow, blue, red and black, and white. The jersey is available in sizes XS–XXXL, the pants in sizes 28–40 and the gloves in XS–XXL.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Fly Racing’s 2012 catalog is pretty expansive, and we think that it all looks pretty good. We do wish the F16 pants had leather inners on both sides to protect from pipe burns, however. At the track or on the trail, the gear will net you compliments and jealous looks from riders wearing older stuff—and you have no obligation to tell them you didn’t spend a ton of money on your new gear! You can find the F16 gear, as well as the rest of Fly’s 2012 lineup, at www.flyracing.com. The prices are:  jersey, $29.95; pants, $69.95; and gloves, $19.95. q

Cammi Pierre models the Fly Racing gear for us before hopping on her Yamaha Banshee to test it. She thought the gear looked great and had a comfortable fit.
