Since our partnership with the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) began this year, we have been trying to highlight some of the top up-and-coming racers who travel the circuit round by round, and as the motto says, “Live life, race WORCS.” Most of the pros and amateurs we have featured so far live in the heart of the schedule in places like SoCal, Arizona and Nevada. This month, we are looking east.
Tim Wyatt and Wes Barker are not your average guys racing the local circuit. For the 2013 season, the pair of drivers made the trip from their homes in Georgia to compete in every WORCS round in the Pro Production SxS class. This commitment goes to show you the strength that WORCS carries in the racing community. Another southeastern racer by the name of William Yokley also made the trek in 2011 and ended up winning his first WORCS SxS championship.
At the halfway mark of this season, the Georgia duo currently sits in a respectable fourth (Wyatt) and 10th (Barker) in the point standings, thanks to strong and consistant finishes. However, the rest of the story is a little more interesting. You see, Wes Barker is a former Polaris Industries executive that also races RZRs back home with his son in the Georgia Off-Road Series. There the Dawsonville resident competes in a turbo-charged RZR S 800 and regularly finishes ahead of XP 900s, Mavericks and Wildcats. Barker's new career is in management at Royston, a company that builds in-store displays for companies like Dunkin' Donuts and 7-Eleven.
The head of the team, Tim Wyatt, wears many hats at his home base of Canton, Georgia. When he's not thinking about or competing at WORCS events, he is promoting the Georgia Off-Road Series (http://www.gorsracing.com) UTV races, which take place at the Durhamtown Plantation just north of Atlanta. Wyatt is also one of the largest UTV or SxS aftermarket accessory dealers in the Southeast. Wyatt's newest venture came to be when fellow GORS racer Tripp Melton purchased the local Polaris dealership (RGR Motorsports) in Cumming, Georgia. To say these guys have their hands full is an understatement.
To keep things simple while they are out west racing WORCS, the pair keeps their machines as close to stock as possible. They know that the more modifications you have, the more work goes into keeping a machine running properly. As far as aftermarket products go, Wyatt and Barker both use the latest Elka Suspension Stage 5s, GBC tires and Holz Racing products. Look for the Georgia pair at the next WORCS round, where they will be the ones in the matching red-and-white RZR XPs sporting #55 and #148.
