BUYER’S GUIDE: 2016 2-Wheel-Drive ATV’s

2014 Honda FourTrax Recon

Another year has passed, which means new and exciting ATV models have hit the market. Nowadays, these machines are coming with more features at better price points. Power steering is becoming a standard feature on a lot of new machines, which is a nice thing to have.

The 4×4 market is gaining new models every year, which is a major plus; unfortunately, the sport-quad side of things is beginning to dwindle. There are less offerings of sport ATVs than we have seen in a long time. Yamaha’s Raptor 250 and 125 have become more difficult to find, along with Kawasaki’s KFX450 and Can-Am’s DS 450, but they are out there, so contact your local dealer and they can help locate them for you. Some machines aren’t getting updated this year, like Honda’s TRX450R that remains unchanged from previous years with its steel frame and carburetor. We hope that as time goes on we will see more thrilling sport ATVs hit the market again as technology keeps advancing.

However, there are still great options to choose from at great prices. Assembled in the pages that follow are photos, prices and descriptions of over 80 ATVs that are out for 2016.
The prices listed are base MSRP, so depending on your destination, better deals await you.

BUYERS_44_Arctic Cat 300

ARCTIC CAT 300 ($4,399)
This Cat shares the same important ATV values as its bigger sibling but as a two-wheel-drive ATV. The 300 has been around for a while and remains reliable with a 270cc four-stroke engine that is liquid-cooled. Double-A-arm suspension covers the front, while a swingarm-type suspension smooths the ride in the rear. It can tow up to 500 pounds and is slowed by hydraulic disc brakes.

BUYERS_45_Arctic Cat 150

ARCTIC CAT 150 ($3,799)
This little Cat comes with cargo racks and can tow 300 pounds. The air-cooled, 149cc SOHC, four-stroke engine is smooth and reliable. Single-A-arm suspension covers the front of the 150, while the rear rides on a swingarm. An automatic CVT transmission with forward, neutral and reverse is connected to the Cat’s powerplant.

2014 Honda FourTrax Recon

HONDA RECON ($4,049)
Honda’s Recon is their smallest utility ATV. It is powered by a 229cc mill that is air-cooled and carbureted. It has a manual transmission that doesn’t require the use of the clutch, but you can upgrade to the ES version for $250 that lets you electronically shift gears through a handlebarmounted shifting system.

BUYERS_47_Kawasaki Brute Force 300

KAWASAKI BRUTE FORCE 300 ($4,299)
The Brute Force 300 is a rear-wheel-driven machine that has an automatic CVT-style transmission. It can tow up to 500 pounds, and its steel racks can hold a combined 110 pounds of cargo. The 271cc, four-stroke ATV is a lot of fun to drive and has good utility features incorporated into its design at a decent price point.

Buyers_48_Kymco MXU 300

KYMCO MXU 300 ($3,899)
The Kymco MXU 300 is closely similar to Kawasaki’s Brute Force 300. Both machines are electronically started with single-cylinder four-stroke engines. The Kymco has a 270cc bore instead of 271 like the Kawi’s. The MXU 300 has an automatic CVT-style transmission with reverse. Hydraulic disc brakes come standard up front and in the rear of this machine.

Buyers_49_Kymco MXU150

KYMCO MXU 150X ($3,099)
The MXU 150 sports a 149cc, air-cooled four-stroke engine paired with an automatic CVT-style transmission. This rear-wheel-driven machine has drum brakes in the front with a hydraulic disc brake to slow down the rear. It is started electrically, but the MXU comes with a backup kickstarter in case the battery dies while you’re out on the trails.
