Boss McKannick provides the info you need to know —

Dear Boss,
I have a 2015 Honda Rancher 420 DCT IRS. The check-engine light is flashing code 23. I’ve already replaced the shift angle sensor with no luck. I’ve heard that the O2 sensor is another possibility. I’d like to know for sure before I spend $50 on that. Can you tell me if there are any other possible causes other than the O2 sensor or shift angle sensor? Is there any risk in riding my quad with it flashing code 23? Thanks in advance for any advice you can share.

I guess we need to come to a common understanding on just what light you are referring to! To you, is the check-engine light the gear indicator, or is it the maintenance indicator (wrench) that is flashing? You see, son, the dif- ferent lights flashing the same code mean different things! The gear indicator flashing 23 is the shift angle sensor but only on the DCT and ES models. If the maintenance indicator (wrench) is flashing 23, it indicates a failure of the O2 sensor. I have seen reports of the Ranchers and Rubicons going through an inordinate amount of O2 sensors. Possibly there was a bad batch. Hopefully, the replacement sensor will last longer than the first!

You can obtain a service manual for your Rancher here: https://drive .google.com/drive/folders/0B_ TKST sdx3KNRjVadWNVLW16ZDQ?tid= 0B_TKSTsdx3KNRlRpdjBDQjl5TGs. Error code 23 is explained in pages 4–9 with servicing information on pages 4–24.
