Fully functioning gear that will tame Mother Nature By the staff of Dirt Wheels

Having the proper gear when riding an ATV or driving a UTV is a must. You need something that offers great protection and functionality. During certain seasons it can be sunny one minute and a blizzard the next. Cortech is dedicated to making gear that will take on the elements at a reasonable price. The gear we selected is the Sequoia XC Adventure jacket and pant.

Cortech hit a home run with the integrated hydration pack. The jacket has the option to slide the hydration pack’s shoulder straps through the jacket for an awesome fit. It has enough pockets to carry crucial tools or gear as well.

SEQUOIA XC ADVENTURE JACKET, $349.99

The Sequoia XC Adventure jacket has great features, and at $349.99, it’s a bargain compared to other jackets in its class. We were impressed by how well the jacket fit. There are multiple ways to adjust this jacket to make it fit for you. With adjustable forearm straps to secure the elbow armor and gather any slack in the material, it has a tailored feel. There are also two waistbands that when you tighten the jacket it tapers down for a great fit. Rainguard technology makes the jacket waterproof, yet allows your body heat and perspiration to exhaust through the material.

During our test it heated up during the afternoon, which wasn’t a big deal for the Sequoia. It has multiple vents in the sleeves, or you can simply remove the sleeves to have an enduro-style vest. There’s a convenient, large, rear storage pocket where you can stow away the removed sleeves or any gear you may need. If we got overly hot we could remove the interior liner, which is great, because the entire jacket is vented underneath. One of the coolest features is the integrated hydration backpack. The design of the jacket accepts the shoulder straps of the hydration backpack to be routed through pathways into the inside of the jacket. Once you put the jacket on, the lower strap is connected through a buckle system around the outside of the jacket, which helps keep the weight off of your back and held securely.

Underneath the hydration pack is a large mesh ventilation area that can be exposed by removing a zipper-enclosed pocket that can be reinstalled for colder rides. There are also two removable chest pockets that unveil large mesh panels for ventilation equal to the rear. We loved the multiple pockets: it has a total of nine pockets that are all waterproof. There is a total of 13 pockets available if you add the pockets on the hydration backpack. We found the microfiber collar was a nice touch over long rides; it wouldn’t dig into your skin whatsoever. The last and very important feature of this jacket is the protection it offers. It has CE-approved armor at the elbow, a two-piece shoulder armor and an articulated back protector. These will help protect some vital body parts in the event of a crash.

One of the venting features is removable, zip-off pockets that reveal venting material that flows into the entire jacket to keep you cool during your ride. There is also a large venting exhaust area on the back of the jacket for added airflow.

SEQUOIA XC ADVENTURE PANT, $164.99

To complement the great Sequoia jacket is the Sequoia pant. Like the jacket, the pant fits very well. It has two waist adjustments on the left and right sides that cinch down tight around your waist. The waist closure above the zipper is a unique hook system instead of a button. We didn’t have any issues with it coming undone. On the lower section of the pant legs are Velcro adjustments, so you can have a tight fit around your boots. We enjoyed that nothing could get in or out once the lower leg of the pant was tight. Storage in the pant isn’t as extensive as the jacket, but it offers two large Velcro pockets on the front left and right upper-thigh area that could keep your hands warm and hold a cell phone or wallet. You can easily use knee braces or guards while riding with the Sequoia pant. Accordion panels help with knee movement. A large portion of the pant is vented, so when you remove the waterproof Rainguard inner liner, you feel a rush of wind that feels amazing on hotter days. This pant is waterproof when the liner is installed for the wetter seasons. The pant offers protection, with removable, three-position, CE-approved knee armor and removable hip armor.

OUR THOUGHTS

We’re very impressed with the Cortech Sequoia XC gear. It’s well built with materials from the abrasion-resistant Carbolex to the Rainguard waterproofing. It does feel heavier than standard motocross-based gear, but it was so comfortable to ride in that we didn’t notice the weight after some ride time. We liked the zippers at the top of the pants and the bottom of the jacket that allows you to attach both together as one unit. This helped with any elements trying to get on our backs or down our pants. One of the smaller but better features is the jacket has Velcro on the front zipper flap protector and Velcro on the hydration hose. This keeps the hydration hose from bouncing behind you and keeping it where you can find it. The jacket and pant seal up very well, keeping you warm and the elements out in the colder months. The Phoslite reflective piping found on the jacket and pant are great for visibility in low-light conditions. Luckily, we didn’t find out how well the armor actually worked, but it’s a relief knowing that it’s there. If you’re looking for a great enduro/adventure jacket and pant, we would suggest giving the Cortech Sequoia XC system a try! The jacket and pant come in black or gray/black. The jacket comes in the following sizes: XS–4XL and tall M–3XL. The pant comes in the following sizes: XS–4XL, tall M–3XL and Short M–3XL. Contact: www.cortech.net.
