2014 ARCTIC CATS
The only cool “Cat lovers”
Anyone who thinks the only cat lovers are little old ladies in knickknack-laden apartments hasn’t had a look at the 2104 Arctic Cat lineup. At the top of the Cat food chain are two new four-seater “bad kitties” joining the new-in-2013 Wildcat 4. The Wildcat 1000 Limited and the Wildcat 4X are the two new models in the lineup. Dimension-wise, they don’t differ much from the existing Wildcat 4, but the Limited has two-tone color-matched bucket seats, aluminum front and rear bumpers, and bed-mounted tie-down hooks. The 4X has the same upgrades, but gains the Wildcat X 90-plus-horsepower engine and 27-inch Maxxis Bighorn tires instead of the 26-inch Bighorns on the Wildcat 4 and 4 Limited.
All of the Wildcats get a brake pedal with a new lever ratio for more powerful braking. In addition, the X models are blessed with dual-piston front calipers and steering geometry that provide better traction feel for the front wheels.
You may wonder at the small quantity of changes, but remember, the 2013 Wildcats already had compression-adjustable Fox shocks, 18 inches of rear-wheel travel and 17 inches of front-wheel travel. The Wildcats also feature arched quarter doors that the latest and greatest SxS brands are boldly copying for 2014.
Arctic Cat hasn’t forgotten recreational SxS users or those who use a SxS for work. There are a total of seven Prowler models, starting with the basic Prowler 500 HDX, then stepping up to the 550, then the 700 and finally the fully clawed Prowler 1000 XTZ.
ATV EMPHASIS ON RECREATION
Between single-seat 4WD ATVs and two-up 4×4 models, there are 19 Arctic Cat recreational models. They range from the basic 300, 400 and 450, all the way to the 1000 XT. For the popular 550 and 700 displacements, there is a standard model designated with the engine size, the same machine in Limited trim and finally the full-boat XT trim. The 1000 is only available in XT for the solo machine, and only in Limited spec for the two-seater. XT and Limited models have a rear sway bar and new shock setting for improved handling, aluminum wheels and painted bodywork. The Limited also comes standard with a 3000-pound winch and front and rear bumpers.
Given Arctic Cat’s 4×4-heavy model line, it should surprise nobody that the only competition models listed are the MudPro 1000 Limited and MudPro 700 Limited. Other specialty models include the DVX 300 and XC 450 sport models, two diesel 4×4 models, and two 90cc units and a 150cc for youth riders. See how easy it is to be a “Cat lover”? There was no official word on the 50-inch-wide trail version of the Wildcat at press time; however, our spies in the trenches tell us we should see it released by the end of 2013.
