Much more than a full windshield By the staff of Dirt Wheels

In part two of our Can-Am Maverick R project build, we are starting to outfit the new machine with creature comforts to get us through the cold winter riding season. What started as a simple windshield install turned into a full day in the shop—installing the windshield, and assembling the roof and the intake scoop that are required when you add any full windshield to the Maverick R.

You see, the Maverick R requires lots of airflow to pass between the two seats entering the intake system, not only to power the engine, but to provide flow to the multiple radiators located behind the seats.

When you go to order large pieces like roofs, windshields or skid plates, expect to pay a lot for shipping. The sheer size of these components requires oversized packaging, hence the higher prices. So, if you order an item that comes in sections, you might save on shipping, but you will have to do all the assembly work yourself like we did here. 

While the windshield install was pretty straightforward, assembling the roof and roof scoop was very involved. In fact, there were over 20 pages of instructions needed to complete the task. 


Can-Am did a great job illustrating the steps, as well as explaining them in terms that the average guy understands. There are no special tools needed, and only a small amount of drilling was required. The roof and scoop (two different parts) married cleanly in the end and installed with great fit and finish. Another thing you want to keep in mind when installing a full windshield, roof and scoop on your Maverick R is that the scoop will take away even more of your rear-view sight line out the back of the machine, so a good set of side-view mirrors will be needed more than ever.


We started this project series that will run all year by assembling a list for do-it-yourselfers to build their own on-board toolkit. We didn’t actually build our own, though. Instead, we opted to carry the SuperATV Ultimate toolkit. It has everything you need to work on the Maverick R, plus a bunch of extras to help out your buddies on the trail. In part three of our build, we will be installing a full complement of DRT components on the Maverick R. Most important, a set of mirrors (pictured) to give our driver the ability to see behind the machine, a Y-strap to hold the spare tire in place, and a storage bag that fits inside that spare tire.
