— Could this be the ultimate 400EX? —
Honda sold thousands of TRX400EX sport quads and you still see plenty of them out on the trail. Rarely are they box stock though, because the 400EX has always been a popular machine for its owners to modify and improve. Of the modified and customized EXs we’ve seen, this one here is at the top of the pecking order. You just don’t see that many with an exotic aluminum frame.
This Honda 400EX belongs to Dirt Wheels reader Blake Holzgen. It was his winter project and here is how it was looking when Spring rolled around. He was able to find a brand new 2003 NOS LRD aluminum frame. He also got a hold of an aluminum bumper, grab bar, nerf bars and foot pegs. That was the motivation to give his older Honda sport quad a complete make-over.
Blake started off by searching for any LRD parts he could find, new or used. Other desirable components he sought out were made by Roll Design. Based on his efforts, his quad is fitted with Roll Design A-arms, swing arm, stainless brake pedal and shifter, along with a steering stem and handlebar clamps. He went with Axis shocks to complete the high-grade suspension package.
The attention to detail is outstanding on this machine, with polished motor mounts and allen bolts, titanium banjo and bar clamp bolts, and steel braided brake lines. Of course, it’s fitted with extra strong and lightweight aluminum racing wheels. It seems that the engine is still a work in progress, but it does already have a Hinson clutch and Sparks Racing exhaust.
Blake went with a custom graphics kit that offered a clean but stylish design. The Dirt Wheels crew gives him a top rating for the overall results of his 400EX vision. We would love to have a quad like his in our garage. So, what’s in your garage? Do you have a sport quad, 4×4 quad or UTV that we should feature here and in the printed magazine? If so, then do what Blake did. Take some good photos of it and E-mail them to us. Also, make sure you include some detailed info on it, along with your name, city & state.
