BRAYDON BAKER AND POLARIS WIN THE BARSTOW 300 PRO OPEN UTVS

JOE TERRANA AND CAN-AM WIN CA300 PRO TURBOS

The Unlimited Off-Road Racing series completed its 2023 Triple Crown with the second annual California 300 south of Barstow. Here’s the race recap from the Martelli Brothers. After an afternoon of thrilling action in the Barstow desert, Brayden Baker found himself atop the final standings in the 2023 California 300 UTV and Limited Race, when the dust finally settled. With a final time of 5:18:28, Baker finished more than 12 minutes ahead of runner-up Sierra Romo in both their class (Pro Open UTVs) and the overall standings, taking over the lead on the final lap after running towards the front all day.

Saturday’s Limited Race sent more than 40 race teams out into the unforgiving Barstow desert, where they’d take on three laps of a 67-mile course. Top qualifier Bruce Binnquist and BDI Geiser Racing would start first and lead the first lap, with Bob Briggs and Romo turning the next fastest laps behind him. But the attrition level began to rise on that second lap, as Binnquist was forced to stop on track and give up the lead; that opened the door for Romo and Joe Terrana to make their moves, and that duo would take the top spots in the overall and Pro Turbo class standings, respectively, at the end of Lap 2. Romo and Baker would find themselves closely matched on track going into the final lap, each facing issues of their own, but it was a final lap stop for Romo—combined with Baker’s fastest lap of the race—that made the difference.

UTV Pro Unlimited class winner and Barstow native Zach Quiroz would complete the overall podium, with Terrana in fourth and UTV Pro NA winner Carson Wernimont in fifth. Terrana, who won the Mint 400, teamed up with UFC legend Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone to use his Maveric X3 for the race; Cerrone stepped in to drive the final lap. Other class winners to crack the overall top 10 were Sara Price (UTV Pro Super Stock Turbo) in seventh overall and Michael Mamelli Jr. (UTV PR-100) in ninth.

MASON CARTER WINS THE YOUTH 1000S

CALIFORNIA 300 PRO UTVS

After finishing on the podium here last year, Mason Cotter finished two spots better in his second attempt at the California 300 Youth 1000 Race on Friday. Cotter would take the checkered flag over 2022 winner Chaden Zane Minder, starting his sixth lap prior to the timed cutoff as Minder and the rest of the remaining field would complete their fifth lap after the clock ran out.

Of the three Youth races on the schedule for the weekend, Friday’s Youth 1000 event featured the most powerful UTVs, the biggest lap, and the longest duration. With one hour on the clock, racers would complete as many laps as they could on an 8.24-mile course. Sixth place starter Jacob Williamson would post the fastest first lap with a 12:07.769, nine seconds ahead of Cotter, and setting the stage for a showdown to see if anyone could make it to a sixth lap.

DIRT BIKES RETURN TO BARSTOW

The first Barstow-to-Vegas Desert Classic dirt bike race was held in 1964, the last B2V was in 1989, and the Martelli brothers brought back pro dirt bike racing to Barstow in the second California 300. JCR/Honda rider Preston Campbell was untouchable in the Barstow desert on Friday morning, winning the inaugural California 300 Motorcycle Race with an unofficial time across the line of 4:21:22. On a course designed by his father, 2018 Off-Road Motorsport Hall of Fame inductee Johnny Campbell, the younger Campbell ushered in the return of bikes to the high desert with a blistering pace ahead of Barstow native and runner-up Matthew Combs.
