CALIFORNIA RESOURCES SECRETARY MIKE CHRISMAN AND STAFF FROM GOVERNOR SCHWARSZENEGGER’S OFFICE MEET WITH OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE LEADERSHIP OF CALIFORNIA
BAKERSFIELD, CA (September 12, 2006.) On September 6, 2006 OHV leaders from all over the state of California met in Sacramento for the first in a series of meetings intended to ensure that the OHV community is regularly informed and engaged in the regulatory and legislative process. Fred Wiley, Executive Director of the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) said “I am pleased and honored by the invitation that was extended to the OHV leadership of California. The fact the Governor and his senior staff have committed to a series of meetings tells us that he is serious about understanding the specific issues facing the OHV community.”
During the meeting, the OHV leadership explained the many challenges facing our community today. One of those challenges is the fact the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) program has a sunset provision that requires periodic reauthorization of the program. The OHMVR program, which is managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation, is currently the ONLY program within that department with a sunset provision. Another challenge discussed is that off-roading has grown exponentially in the past 30 years and the State of California has not opened one new State Vehicular Recreation Area in that time. “Carefully balancing the protection of the environment while accommodating the increased need for OHV recreation is a priority for off-road enthusiasts.” commented Meg Grossglass, Director of Legal Affairs for the San Diego Off-Road Coalition.
Governor Schwarzenegger’s administration is committed to having an on-going open dialogue with the OHV leadership of California about legislative, regulatory and other important issues affecting this state’s OHV community. “This first meeting was very productive and the OHV community looks forward to making progress on the issues that matter to motorized recreationists,” stated Don Amador, Western Representative of the BlueRibbon Coalition.
