Round four of the Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals series was held near Waukon, Iowa on June seventh. Threatening weather moved in just before the green flag, and rain started to fall for the Pro ATV start. The cloudburst lasted about a minute, but it was enough to wet everything down. Muscatine, Iowa racer Matt Lindle rocketed out front for the hole shot aboard his Quad City Quad Doctor GT Thunder Honda. The youngster held off former series champion Rob Zimmerman and newcomer David Crane for most of the first loop. Zimmerman pushed his Team Honda Racing 450R to the lead before the first checkpoint, with Lindle only four seconds behind and Crane checking in just three seconds later. The Maxxis Scott Goggles Honda of Lindle was running with the leaders all day until his chain fell off and he ran out of gas on the last lap. Those delays would move Lindle back to fourth place, twelve seconds behind the Aupperle Racing Honda of Shane Gaunt and just seven seconds ahead of the Duncan Racing Dirt Works Honda of Brian Hulsey.

David Crane made his move on lap three after a mistake by Zimmerman. The Golden, Mississippi Rekluse KTM rider got past the stalled Maxxis Pro Armor Zimmerman machine on a gnarly uphill section. Crane then put in some quick times to post a win with a seven minute and forty nine second margin of victory over Zimmerman on lap seven. “It was good,” said Crane. “A lot of mud, a lot of rocks, but overall it was a great day. I’m just glad the rain stayed away a little while longer.”

The Honda of former OMA Nationals champion Rob Zimmerman saw the checkers at two hours, nine minutes, and thirty two seconds to capture second place. That finish will provide enough series points to give Zimmerman the lead over defending champion Andy Lagzdins, who missed this event. The Aupperle Racing pit crew assisted Zimmerman at this event, along with their rider Shane Gaunt, who collected third place for his efforts. “It was a rough race, brutal,” said the GT Thunder Honda rider. Gaunt fought through a flat tire and overheating problems to pull off his podium finish.

The Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals series is nearing their half way point in the 2008 season and former champion Rob Zimmerman has taken over the points lead. Current champion Andy Lagzdins is still in the chase along with David Crane and Shane Gaunt. Brandon Sommers has topped the podium twice this year, so he is also right in the mix. This year is shaping up to be another exciting season for the series that still does things the old fashioned way. If you are looking for challenging race courses with a friendly atmosphere you should check out the OMA Nationals. This is off road racing.
