EMERGENCY REMOTE LOCATIONS APP
At a recent UTV Club meeting we were shown an important new remote locations smartphone app that every off-road enthusiast should download. Called what3words, it’s a free app that when used, will be able to pinpoint your exact location so you can share with rescuers anywhere on the planet. How it works is, if you dial 911 and don’t exactly know where you are, the operator should ask you to open the what3words app on your phone. You also may be able to get a text out or better yet use a device such as a Garmin InReach to get the “3 words” out.

Depending on your location, 3 unique words will appear on the screen.
By telling the operator these three words, they can figure out the coordinates within 5 feet of where you are so you don’t have to figure it out. The service is being used by everyone from Uber drivers to off-grid adventure seekers so check into it before you need it. Download it from the Apple App Store or at Google Play.
