Can-Am has had an edge in the sport UTV market since the release of its Maverick X3 X ds and rs machines. The suspension travel numbers have been bigger, and so has the horsepower rating in 2018. According to many different dealers on the West Coast, desert and sand dune riders are choosing the X3 over the RZR. Polaris released the Dynamix version of the RZR XP Turbo in hopes that it would keep their momentum going. In perfect Polaris fashion, the company couldn’t sit back and let Can-Am take all the glory, so they just launched a direct attack on the X3 rs with the all-new RZR XP Turbo S!
The S model targets Can-Am’s 72-inch-wide Maverick X3 X rs model. The Turbo S has a new suspension system that expands the track width to 72 inches with reinforced shock mounts, stronger A-arms, radius rods and trailing arms. Polaris claims that this RZR has 25 inches of travel before you bottom out to the skid plate, but the wheel travel is 19 inches in the front and 21 inches in the rear. The suspension components include the Dynamix active suspension system with Fox Internal Bypass Live Valve shocks. The fronts are 2.5s and the rears are 3.0s, so there is more oil volume in the shocks to help them cool, which provides less shock fade over time. The rear shock bodies are larger than what comes on the XP Turbo Dynamix that was released prior to the S.
The front end of this rad rig has been beefed up. The front differential is shared between the new RZR RS1 single-seater. It’s claimed to be a lot stronger than previous RZR front diffs. The axles on the Turbo S are bigger and stronger to accommodate the impressive stock 32-inch ITP Coyote tires. This is the first UTV in the industry to come stock with 32-inch tires. The wheelbase comes in at 90 inches, which is the same as a RZR XP Turbo Dynamix, but the ground clearance number has gone up to 16 impressive inches in comparison to 13.5 inches from a Dynamix.
The steering rack is larger on this model, and with the help of the EPS, it offers more steering assist, which is another feature that will help turn those big 32-inch tires that are wrapped around 15-inch wheels.
Polaris got serious about the interior and exterior of the RZR XP Turbo S. The whole dash has been redesigned to make it easier to utilize the various switches and 7-inch Ride Command touchscreen display. There is now a gauge cluster in front of the steering wheel that provides all the standard readouts the driver needs while the Ride Command system can be controlled separately.
The front and rear fascia have been totally redesigned and have a more aggressive look. The ROPS roll cage is also new and has an aluminum roof.
READY FOR BATTLE
The all-new Polaris RZR XP Turbo S looks like it is going to be an awesome machine that is ready to battle through the trails. It still features Polaris’ potent ProStar, 925cc, turbo-inducted parallel-twin four-stroke engine that pumps out 168 horsepower. The throttle mapping has been updated for more control and a stronger hit. The machine can reach speeds up to 85 mph. And last, the CVT clutch box has been redesigned to provide more venting, which helps lower the belt temps.
