FIRST LOOK: ALL-NEW KAWASAKI RIDGE AND RIDGE XR

Team Green launches its latest premium sport recreation/utility side-by-side

We just received our first look and a limited test drive aboard the all-new 2024 Kawasaki Ridge and Ridge XR side-by-sides. Model variations include open cabs as well as enclosed cabs with complete HVAC systems. The Ridge bridges the gap between utility and recreational use with features like a powerful four-cylinder engine, navigation, a dump bed, and substantial towing capability, with the Ridge XR adding features that will appeal to consumers looking for additional sport-tuned performance.

Kawasaki Ridge
The more sport-focused Ridge XR will be available in three trim levels, starting with the 2024 Ridge XR HVAC to be released this Spring.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE RIDGE AND RIDGE XR?

The Ridge makes 92 peak horsepower, while the Ridge XR makes 116 horsepower.  It’s the same engine, but the Ridge XR received revised engine mapping and a different muffler design to increase power by 25 percent. Both make the same maximum torque of 73.8 lb-ft. Both machines are also 50-state legal according to CARB data.

The Ridge gets electronically selectable 2WD/4WD with a dual-mode lockable rear differential. The Ridge XR has a front and rear lockable differential, making it a better performer in extreme terrain.

Both models come with 14-inch aluminum wheels, but the Ridge has a staggered 27-inch tire size, while the Ridge XR gets the same size 30-inch tires front and rear. This increases the Ridge XR’s ground clearance by an inch over the Ridge, and the rear tire track width is wider on the Ridge XR.

The Ridge has room for three with its low-back contoured bench seat and the driver’s adjustable seat. The Ridge XR receives two adjustable contoured bucket seats with center console storage separating them.

Kawasaki Ridge
The 2024 Kawasaki Ridge Ranch Edition gets a Warn VRX 45 Powersport Winch with corded remote and Ranch Edition interior for $23,999.

The base and HVAC models will be available in Candy Persimmon Red, with the Ranch Edition model in Metallic Stardust White and the Limited model in Metallic Shadow Gold.

Kawasaki Ridge
The 2024 Kawasaki Ridge HVAC gets an enclosed cab with AC and heat, full doors with power windows, roof liner, windshield washer/wiper, rearview mirror, and interior ceiling light for $29,999

The Ridge XR will be available in three trim levels, starting with the 2024 Ridge XR HVAC ($31,999) to be released this Spring, followed by the 2025 Ridge XR and Ridge XR Deluxe in the fall. All three levels are available in either Metallic Graystone or Ice Gray. Additional information on features and pricing for  some Ridge XR trim levels was unavailable at the time of publishing.

Kawasaki Ridge
Kawasaki kept displacement for the 4-cylinder engine at 999cc. The Ridge XR version is tuned for additional horsepower and torque.

HOW BIG IS THE 4-CYLINDER ENGINE?

Kawasaki kept displacement at 999cc while dividing the workload between four pistons and four valves per cylinder (two intake and two exhaust) with DOHC. It’s designed for multi-purpose use, tackling demanding chores and producing giant grins on spirited trail rides. The top speed is governed to 75mph. Still, Kawasaki shared with us that there are some options for business-oriented consumers (industrial, ranching, etc.) where a lower top speed is desired for employee operation.

Kawasaki Ridge
Gear selection includes high and low range, and the driver’s can electronically select between WORK, NORMAL, and SPORT performance modes on the fly.

Performance for a variety of tasks is enhanced by presenting the driver with three power modes that can be selected electronically from the driver’s seat whether the vehicle is parked or in motion: WORK MODE provides a milder response in acceleration and engine braking, which is excellent for tasks that involve transporting heavy cargo over uneven surfaces. SPORT MODE is designed for enthusiasts who like adrenaline-infused trail rides with a more direct connection to performance. NORMAL MODE offers a blend of both, delivering full power with more comfortable control. The engine’s cooling system features a large-capacity radiator and a right-side engine cooling fan. The 1,120 W generator makes ample power for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and other accessories. Nearly 13 gallons of fuel capacity should be plenty to take adventure seekers even further.

Kawasaki Ridge
If your needs require a lockable front differential, you’ll want to step up to the Ridge XR model.

WHAT’S THE DRIVE SYSTEM LIKE?

The Ridge uses an automatic CVT with high- and low-range gear selections. The electrically selectable 4WD and rear differential lock add flexibility between maximum traction or single-wheel-drive for navigating fragile surfaces. Suppose your demands require a lockable front differential for true 4WD in the most challenging situations. In that case, you’ll have to step up to the Ridge XR with front and rear differentials electronically selectable from the driver’s seat.

Kawasaki Ridge
Easy access to general maintenance areas on the new Ridge will be a favorite feature for DIY mechanics.

HOW EASY IS GENERAL MAINTENANCE?

Much like the new Kawasaki Mule Pro-FXT 1000, access to routine maintenance areas is as convenient as possible; the automotive-style screw-on oil filter is easily accessed by removing the fender panel forward of the rear wheel. Air filter access is under the passenger seat, and battery access can be achieved through an access panel beneath the dump bed latch on the passenger side. All maintenance components, including dipsticks, are easy to get to without twisting your hand between hot engine surfaces.

Kawasaki Ridge
Front and rear independent A-arm suspension supports an overall width of 64 inches with 12.7 inched of wheel travel at all corners.

WHAT’S CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION LIKE?

The RIDGE cab structure ensures high seal performance for doors and windows on HVAC models, enhancing the vehicle’s overall quality. The chassis was specifically engineered to accommodate plentiful suspension travel and the additional weight of a cab enclosure. Kawasaki tells us a priority was low noise and low vibration inside the cab to increase ride enjoyment.

Front and rear independent A-arm suspension supports an overall width of 64 inches, and wheel wells are made from steel rather than plastic. With a wheelbase of 90.7 inches, the Ridge has a short 14.7-foot turning radius; we can’t wait to get it out on tighter trail systems.

The 5-way preload-adjustable shocks are mounted to the lower A-arms and feature single-rate springs on the front and dual-rate springs on the rear, producing 12.7 inches of wheel travel at the rear and 10.1 inches up front. To enhance ride comfort, Kawasaki tells us the suspension settings are designed to minimize chassis roll speed, providing a more confident feel for passengers when cornering.

Kawasaki Ridge
The gas-assist dumping bed can handle up to 1,000 pounds, and the Ridge will tow 2,000 pounds.

CAN THE RIDGE HANDLE TOUGH JOBS?

The gas-assisted tilting cargo bed measures 35 x 49 x 12.8 inches with a load capacity of 1,000 pounds. It features tilting-release levers on both sides, allowing easy access to the engine. The bed incorporates a single-latch tailgate release system and can be removed without tools. The cargo bed walls have slots for cargo dividers. Octagonal slots in the cargo bed walls accommodate the new-style optional KQR accessory mounts, enabling snap-mounted attachment of a toolbox or other items to the cargo bed rails. Additionally, the RIDGE boasts a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs. making use of a standard 2-inch tow hitch receiver.

WHAT OTHER FEATURES ARE STANDARD?

The RIDGE shines with painted fenders and LED lighting all around. Tilt steering allows the driver to fine-tune their position for control and comfort. EPS (Electric Power Steering) is standard, and sliding behind the wheel feels like getting into a car, providing a natural sitting position and easy access to controls. Each seating position is equipped with a three-point seat belt, including the center bench seat in the Ridge.

Kawasaki Ridge
The standard Ridge modesl get room for three with bench seating. The HVAC cab is well sealed with emphasis on quiet deadening engine noise.

Doors feature internal and external door handles, with a flat design on the inside to maximize passenger space. High-grade fit and finish details include floor lighting and backlit switches. A wide space between the dashboard and seats allows cross-through movement in the cab, and all trims receive a roof.

The factory-standard full cab on the Ridge XR HVAC, Ridge HVAC, and Ridge Limited models is equipped with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, offering a comfortable escape from extreme weather conditions. The complete cab includes a glass windshield with a ridgeline graphic, full doors with power windows, a glass rear panel, a plastic roof with a roof liner, a windshield wiper and washer, a rearview mirror, and an interior ceiling light.

WHAT’S UP WITH THE FANCY DASH?

A large 7-inch high-grade full-color TFT LCD screen is integrated into the dashboard. Multiple selectable display modes offer customizable information. The high-grade instrumentation includes infotainment features, such as three selectable display modes (Digital, Analog, Simple) and screen background options (black or white). The brightness adjusts automatically based on available light, with manual adjustments available for driver preference. The screen displays various functions, including a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, gear indicator, Driving Mode, Power Mode, clock, CVT temperature, and more. The instrument display indicates calls and messages received when linked to a smartphone via Bluetooth.

Kawasaki Ridge
Multiple selectable display modes offer customizable information, and you can connect your phone via Bluetooth to see incoming calls and messages.

SO IT WILL CONNECT WITH MY SMARTPHONE?

Bluetooth technology in the instrumentation allows wireless connectivity with the side x side. Using the smartphone application RIDEOLOGY THE APP POWERSPORTS, drivers can access vehicle information, log GPS routes, adjust instrument display settings, communicate, and share profiles and trip logs with other users.

WHAT ABOUT CONNECTING ELECTRONIC ACCESSORIES?

The Ridge features a DC socket integrated into the dashboard, and two USB ports are available inside the lidded storage above the glove box. The Ridge is equipped with a terminal block for pre-wiring for accessories below the glove box, while a second terminal block behind the front bumper serves as a connecting point for winch use on models without a pre-equipped winch.
