How many Generals does the Polaris army need? By the staff of Dirt Wheels
Back in 2016 Polaris set the benchmark for what has become the sport-recreation segment of UTVs. Once there were just utility UTVs, but Polaris introduced the first RZR 800 and created the sport UTV market. Those early RZR models are not nearly as “sport” as the base-model General was in 2016. Change is usually good. The General was an immediate hit with suspension that was close to a RZR S, a 60-inch track width, a usable bed and a great cockpit.
Some of the interior highlights were (and are) a seating position that is both upright for vision but also sporty and comfortable. At a time when many machines came without doors, the General not only had full doors but ones that were finished inside and out. Add 100 horsepower and you have a winner. As a result, the General was immediately popular. We like to say the General is a RZR for those who need to pretend they are working.
In 2016 the base General came with steel wheels and Sachs shocks for $15,999. Here we are in virus-ravaged 2020 and Polaris has the General Sport. It is basically a base General with enhanced graphics, painted springs and trail-ready, 12-inch aluminum wheels. And get this, the 2020 Sport is $15,999. That price gets you a great machine with that famed General cab comfort, electronic power steering and a rear differential with turf mode. There is still a base General with steel wheels and a 60-inch width. Any of the General models are ready to take on work and trails in comfort and style.
Since it is expected to see year-round use, the General Sport has a myriad of accessories, including fully enclosed cabs, heaters and the Ride Command system. We are looking forward to testing one soon.
