FREE-WHEELING HONDA 250 BIG RED TRIKE

DW FAN WRITES IN: I have a Honda 250 Big Red, year unknown. My neighbor left it in my garage when he moved away. So, I guess I am left with it. Originally he stated the problem was when going down hills, the transmission seems to go into neutral and it free-wheels down the hill. I have to apply the brake to keep the speed safe until I reach the bottom of the hill. Before I strip the transmission down, can you point me toward the problem and maybe the solution? – Dick Conti Martin, ID.

OUR PRO ANSWER: Your problem is most likely not in your transmission. Sure sounds to us like your 1-way Sprag clutch inside your centrifugal clutch has failed. That 1-way clutch can be reached after removing the right side cover with the engine in the frame. Depending on the severity of the damage, the whole centrifugal clutch may have to be replaced. If you luck out, then just the 1-way clutch will be bad. Here is a very complete step by step repair procedure to replace the 1-way Sprag Clutch: https://forums.justbigreds.com/post/1985-honda-big-red-250es-one-way-clutch-replacement-centrifugal-clutch-side-11617828.
