PROJECT UTV: TUSK RZR TURBO

Great trail additions for your Polaris By the staff of Dirt Wheels

Polaris released their 2016 RZR XP Turbo late in 2015, and it made waves in the sport UTV industry with the most powerful engine at the time, boasting  144 horsepower. The RZR also disputably had the best suspension package on the market. With power and performance in the bag, our idea for this build was to incorporate creature comforts and parts to prolong your trail-riding experience!

 

STI has great wheels and tires in their arsenal. The HD5 beadlock wheel has multiple color beadlock ring options to purchase them with. The rear bumper/spare tire holder is perfect for trail use. You can still access the bed of the RZR while having the ability to store more items on top of the cage extender. Tusk’s quality rear window is best suited for machines with a full front window. Without a windshield, air funnels down your neck: not comfortable in the cold.

MACHINE PROTECTION

We went to Rocky Mountain ATV/MC for most of the parts on this build, and we started by getting parts to protect the RZR. We installed the Tusk UTV EXO front bumper that bolts to the frame and to the roll cage that will help keep the front of the RZR intact in case of an accident. There are mounting points on the bumper to install lights. Next, we bolted on Tusk’s rear bumper that has a cargo rack and spare tire carrier designed into it. The cage extension protects the rear of the machine while giving you storage space and the ability to keep a spare handy in case you get a flat on the trail.

Skid plates are vital to protect the bottom of any UTV if you drive a lot of trails with rocks, trees or trail debris. Tusk offers its Quiet-Glide poly skid plate system for the Turbo that is 3/8-inch thick. While it might make cleaning mud off of the bottom of your machine more difficult, the skid-plate system will protect the bottom of your Polaris, which is more important in the long run.

Protecting the outside of your machine is just as important as protecting the engine and drivetrain. Stock filters can cost $60 or more and are not reusable. We went to Desertcraft to get a reusable RC2 air-filter system that is easy to install. We wanted to protect the CVT belt from breaking due to too much heat, and Desertcraft has a system that inducts more air into the CVT cover to lower temperature up to 40 degrees. The system is called the CVT Blaster II and is easy to install once you accept the idea of cutting holes in the body!

TUSK COMFORTS

We contacted Rocky Mountain ATV/MC and asked them which Tusk items sell best, and these are a few. The stock RZR XP Turbo doesn’t come with a roof, so we got a clip-on Tusk fabric roof. Another good-selling item is their rear window that straps onto the roll cage. Tusk has a half windshield that is mounted with a hinge system so you can flip the windshield down and bolt it down onto the hood if you don’t need it up.

Tusk offers a mirror kit that easily bolts onto the roll cage. It is adjustable so you can get the right angle with ease. Tusk makes a strap-on LED cab light that we mounted up to our RZR. It is easy to mount and provides a lot of light to help you see what you are doing at night. That is a surprisingly huge help, since most UTVs do not have lighted switches or controls.

Most sport UTVs don’t provide enough storage aside from a tiny glovebox, which simply isn’t enough space. Tusk has a cab pack that has a large zipper pocket, a smaller zipper pocket and another pocket that utilizes a pull-tie to keep it closed. It takes little time to install and provides enough space to pack tools, a tire plug kit and more.

FINAL TOUCHES

We went to Assault Industries to get more storage with their Hydration door bags that either mount to the stock doors or can be fastened to aftermarket doors with hook-and-loop material. The Hydration door bags were installed on some ModQuad doors that we pirated from a previous project. The doors provide protection from trail debris.

Assault sells a quick-release fire extinguisher kit that we mounted up to the roll cage. The kit gives you great peace of mind and protection from the possibility of a machine fire. Polaris teamed up with PCI Race Radios and have a Comlink RTX VHF radio system that provides communication between the driver and passengers, as well as other machines with com systems.

And last, the only handling improvement we felt this machine really needed was new tires and beadlock wheels. We chose to go with STI’s HD5 beadlock wheel that allow you to choose between multiple colors for the beadlock rings. We went with a black inner wheel with red beadlock rings. Mounted onto the HD5 wheels are eight-ply Roctane XS tires.

TESTING THE PRODUCTS

The Tusk front bumper and rear roll-cage extension/bumper are well made and durable. The ability to hold a spare tire is a major plus, but you will need to carry tools and a jack to change the tire. The fabric roof provides the occupants shade from the sun and is easy to install while adding next to no weight to the machine. The rear window is a nice touch, but without a full front window, we found out that it can put cold air down your neck in the winter months. The front half windshield directs cold air and dust over you; however, when it gets dirty, it’s no longer transparent. Fortunately, it can easily be folded down and bolted to the hood.

The LED cab light is one of our favorite features. We like to do a lot of night-riding adventures, and it is nice to have a light that illuminates the cab to help see your seat belts or to aid in getting to items in our Tusk cab storage bag or Assault Industries Hydration door bags. The Tusk mirror was very easy to install, and it can help with keeping an eye on your buddies behind you or assist with reversing your machine.

The STI wheels and tires are the only products that altered the RZR XP Turbo’s handling. The eight-ply Roctane XS tires are an improvement over the stock tires. They provide the machine with better traction in most terrain and are more resistant to getting a flat.

This project was designed with trail comfort in mind. We wanted to make the driving experience of an already impressive sport UTV better by adding protection to the machine and add creature comforts from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC’s personal Tusk brand as well as other companies. We are more than pleased with the final result. We have machine protection, weather protection for the passengers and effortless communication. Add to that peace of mind that the eight-ply tires provide and we have a winner.
