When local riding opportunities were being threatened, the Kern Off-Highway Vehicle Association (KOHVA) out of Bakersfield, California, came up with a brilliant idea to help their cause. When they heard that the local newspaper, the Bakersfield Californian, was assigning two reporters to do an in-depth story on the local off-road scene, Jack Patterson, KOHVA vice-president, thought it would be a good idea to take the reporters out for a “familiarization ride” to show them what they do for fun on weekends. At the end of the ride, the reporters were impressed by how safety-consious most riders are and how the majority of ATVers are actually good stewards of the land. They also came away with a whole new understanding of why off-roaders are so passionate about their sport. Perhaps your local club or riding group can do the same thing with your journalists, whether they’re writing a story or not, it can only help.
