If you live in the Midwestern part of the United States and are looking for an alternative to the big GNCC Nationals closer to home, the Offroad Motorcycle and ATV (OMA) Nationals, put on by United Offroad Racing, might be the hot ticket for you.

We think it’s great that, as ATV riding gets ever bigger in popularity, more and more promoters are working to add ATVs to their race schedules. The UOR organization does motorcycle and 4×4 truck racing as well, but with big sponsors such as Moose, Parts Unlimited, Gas Gas, Suzuki and Kawasaki supporting their efforts, quads have joined the pantheon as a viable and exciting addition to their race scene.

The first event took place near Decatur, Arkansas, on March 13-14. It was dubbed the Wildcat 100. The course was five miles long and the quads had one hour to ride a wet and muddy course.
The Wildcat 100 featured a dead-engine start. Once the machines were fired up, the quads had to jam up a hill immediately, quickly separating the powerful machines from the weak. Those unfortunate enough to not have spent enough time tuning and tweaking their machines were showered with a cascade of muddy roost by the front runners above them and forcing early goggle changes.

A motocross track was next in line for the racers, including several big tabletop jumps that gave the many spectators something to hoot and cheer for as the competitors took to the sky and cleared them. The course truly gave riders a taste of everything as the track gave way to a woods section. Tight, technical sections, water crossings, and a rock-strewn geography challenged every rider. Rain had been falling steadily, and the course was muddy and treacherous. Honda TRX450Rs did well in round one. In the Pro ATV class, Jathan Seale came in first at the end of the hour to take the early overall lead in the series. Rob Zimmerman battled Michael Randolph for the rest of the podium spots, and managed to stay ahead to take second place.

Pro ATV Results, Round One:

1.Jathan Seale, Honda TRX450R
2.Rob Zimmerman, Honda TRX450R
3.Michael Randolph, Yamaha YFZ450
4.Joshua Seale, Honda 400EX
5.Kevin Tinsley, Honda TRX450R

Round Two of the OMA series was held at the Thunder Hill XC course in East Rochester, Ohio. Rain prior to the race was a factor, making the Ohio dirt greasy and muddy and causing deep ruts to form.

The course consisted of a six-mile loop. As is typical for Ohio, plenty of woods, hills and tight spots were de rigeur for anyone competing. Thorny branches were also doing their share of damage to machines and riders. Single-lines from the bikes were quickly changed by the four-wheelers to open up new options for passing. Again, Honda 450Rs did well, with Scott Barron battling Rob Zimmerman for the one spot. Scott prevailed, leaving Rob to settle for another second place. Dave Grimm on a Suzuki LT-Z400 placed third. The two second places by Rob put him in first overall after two rounds, followed by Jathan Seale and Scott Barron tied for second, and Michael Randolph and Dave Grimm tied for third. Looks like there will be some great racing ahead!
