— Testing a high-tech, light weight, carbon fiber helmet —

By the staff of Dirt Wheels

The J12 is lightweight and comfortable to wear. We enjoy the vast amount of ventilation the helmet has.

Protection is the most important factor of our sport! We are distressed when we see enthusiasts riding or driving without wearing helmets. Just because your state doesn’t require a helmet doesn’t mean you don’t need one. Whacking your head hurts, and it damages the sport. Other riders wear helmets but find the cheapest model they can. Not all inexpensive helmets offer the right level of protection and comfort. On the other side of the coin, you can spend a lot of cash on a lid that doesn’t offer the protection a cheaper one can. This isn’t the case with Just 1 Racing’s impressive J12 helmet. We picked up a carbon J12 Syncro in blue/Carbon Matte for a test.

This helmet’s shell is made of carbon material. It comes in sizes from XS–XXL. They achieve this through two different shell sizes and EPS layer thicknesses.

Just 1’s helmet is unique in its styling yet also quite aggressive. The shell is made out of carbon fiber, and it weighs in at 1250 grams, or just under 3 pounds. Light weight translates to less stress on your neck. This Italian-made helmet earned DOT (U.S.) and ECE (Europe) safety certifications. The J.1.E.R. emergency cheek pad removal system allows medical personnel to quickly remove the pads to help easily remove the helmet and not further injure a downed rider.

Ventilation is plentiful on the J12 helmet. There are seven front vents, with another six large vents on the rear top and back of the helmet. The view port is large enough to fit the biggest goggles in the industry as well. Just 1’s visor system is stout and allows air to pass through it well. The only downside is that you can’t simply adjust it on the fly.

Just 1’s J12 helmet is one of the more comfortable lids we’ve tested. It is light in weight, so it lessens neck-muscle fatigue. Ventilation keeps our heads cool in the most demanding of situations and wilting temperatures. We do wish that the visor was easily adjustable, but most of the time we don’t notice or try to adjust it. Pricing is fairly steep for the full-carbon J12 at $449.99, but the newer J32 ABS shell version starts at $149.99. You can purchase the helmet in a multitude of color options and style designs.
