PRODUCT EVALUATION: MOTOWORKS EXHAUST FOR HONDA 450R; BOLT-ON POWER-UP
Remember those Star Trek episodes where Captain Kirt was always asking Scotty for more power? The engineers at MotoWorks are all too familiar with this same request. Customers are always clamoring for “more power, Scotty.” To find the right combination of horsepower and torque, you need an experienced performance company.
SR5 EXHAUST SYSTEMS
All Motoworks SR4 Exhaust Systems are developed on both the dyno and the track. It doesn’t do much good to have a high horesepower number pipe with an unrideable powerband. Peak numbers are not the end-all game in aftermarket pipe design. With the high costs associated with an aftermarket exhaust (from $500-$800 for a full system) you want to be careful you are getting a well built, good-running pipe that will last and get the job done.
LOOKING AT THE PRODUCT
We got our MotoWorks SR4 exhaust for our 2007 Honda 450R and held it up to the Dirt Wheels examination table for some careful scrutiny. Here’s what we found. The SR4 is constructed from aircraft quality T-304 stainless steel (for the header pipe) and 6063- T4 aluminum on the exhaust canister. The welds are clean and the pipe has a high overall quality look about it. Our exhaust system mounted up quickly and easily using the existing mounting locations.
PUTTING IT TO THE TEST
The challenge from MotoWorks was to make a pipe that increased the Honda’s “useable” horsepower. Their engineers acknowledge that it is not that difficult to make peak horsepower numbers on a dyno. But when was the last time your rode a dyno? It is the combination of dyno and track testing that led to their SR4 design.
After bolting our MotoWorks exhaust on our machine, we re-jetted the Honda 450R carb to maximize the power output, going from a 138 on the main to a 158. We also readjusted the pilot jet from a 38 to a 50.
With these jetting changes our 450R had new life on the moto circuit. Pickup and acceleration were much improved, all across the power range. The Motoworks exhaust system created more rideable power. It doesn’t come on in a rush, but pulls steadily and drives hard off the bottom end. It pulls longer and harder through the mid-range and has a decent amount of over-rev on the top-end. This, combined with the overall quality of construction, good looks, and smooth and easy fit, made this a worthy accessory match up for our Honda.
