PRODUCT TEST:

PJ1 FILTER CLEANER & OIL

Making it easy By the staff of Dirt Wheels

PJ1 FILTER OIL

While it isn’t really that gross of a task, we rate the fun factor of cleaning air filters right at the level of changing poopy diapers. These diapers don’t take as long. In our eternal search for ways to make air filter maintenance easier, we have come to embrace PJ1’s aerosol filter cleaner and spray filter oil. Both do a great job to minimize mess and keep the inside of your engine happy.

IT’S EASY

The first thing you need is a dirty filter. Prepping the quads for the shootout in this issue took care of that.
Use the cleaner to spray the dirty filter element out of the bike. Massage it into the foam, and let it sit and work for 15 minutes.

PJ1 FILTER OIL

The whole point is, using PJ1 products makes a dirty job a lot cleaner. You are no longer using heavy, sticky oil, and if you stick with the two paired PJ1 air cleaner products, there is never any reason to use solvent to clean filters. The cleaner and water, even cold water, handle the task just fine.

Simply wash the filter with water to get it clean. Truly disgusting filters may take a second application. Most of the time we follow up with normal soap and water. Blot (never wring) the filter to remove excess water, then set the filter somewhere to dry.
After the filter is completely dry, spray the filter inside and out with the spray filter oil. It is red, and you simply act like you are painting the filter red. Work the oil in. Let the oil get tacky, then install the filter. The directions are straightforward. Follow them, and the cleaner and oil work great. The cleaner works best with PJ1 oil. If you have heavy, sticky oil on the filter, it may need to be cleaned with solvent before you start using the PJ1 products.
We have found that the cleaner does not go as far as the oil. We use about two cans of cleaner to one of filter oil. When used as directed, the oil does a great job keeping dirt from getting through the filter. Cleanup is quick and easy.

PJ1 sells both products together as a foam filter care kit for $24.98. The foam air filter oil alone is $14.41 for 13 ounces. The air filter cleaner runs for $13.19 for 15 ounces. That pricing is reasonable, but the primary reason we choose PJ1 for air cleaner service is for its ease and convenience. Check
