CVT BELTS: Secrets to keep your belt alive

It has been said that to a camera or the common observer, tires are a bunch of round black things. That is doubly true of CVT drive belts. Talk about unsung heroes; the belt driving a machine with a CVT is hidden in a vented cover, and they don’t even have different tread patterns. But even if they look the same, all belts are not equal. Belt technology has had to increase as power output of CVT-equipped machines has gone up. It is no coincidence that the advent of “extreme-duty” belts appeared at about the same time…

HOW DO YOU HAUL YOUR MACHINE?

-- Not all of us live at a place where we can just ride to the trails right from our back door. Even if you can, there's always other great riding areas you like go to. So, that means hauling your ATV or UTV somewhere is a standard part of the sport. There are many different ways to do that, from fancy haulers to not-so-fancy. We typically see the full range of dos and don'ts when observing how off-road machinery is transported. Here is an example of some of that creativity and improvising. . When you gotta go… and you…

TODAY’S FUNNY PHOTO —

Another example of why we should wear helmets when we ride... and in this case, life jackets too. D'OH!

A DAY AT THE DUNES: WHAT NOT TO DO ON A QUAD

Our associate editor Colt Brinkerhoff shows you what not to do while cornering a quad in the dunes! Good thing he was wearing protection. Check out the video in the link below to see for yourself! https://youtu.be/gVTOouv_lZA

WHICH GROUP DO YOU BELONG TO?

-- By Ron Lawson -- It’s fun to watch worlds collide. Right now we’re at ground zero as planet ATV, planet motorcycle and planet off-road car smash into one another. UTVs have become common ground for three completely different groups. They all have dirt in common, but they come from different places, speak different languages and can’t really make polite conversation about anything except UTVs. So, if you meet someone who has your exact same RZR, YXZ, Maverick or Wildcat and can’t understand a word he says,…

HOW TO DRIVE FAST IN THE WOODS

Remember how you felt before your first roller-coaster ride? Waiting in line, you tell your friends you aren’t nervous as the butterflies flutter inside. A part of you wants to go back to the Teacups or escape to a hot churro, but it’s too late. You’ve now locked yourself in and you’re squeezing tightly as the clanking chains pull you closer to your inevitable doom. Riding passenger on a modified Polaris RZR XP 900 is kind of like that, except this roller coaster has a steering wheel. Instead of getting a pro driver on…

MUDDIEST PHOTO OF THE DAY

Sometimes you need a tow strap and good riding buddies to help pull you out. Hey, it's just part of the fun, right?

WHY WE WEAR HELMETS!

You can't be having fun if you're not wearing a helmet -- By D. West -- One of my favorite riding buddies is a guy everyone calls Animal. Back when he got started riding many years ago, most of his buddies rode dirt bikes, but he had no trouble keeping up with them on his TRX250R quad. For him, a normal ride has always included trails that require riding skills of the expert level. The Animal enjoys the challenge of conquering difficult trail sections that would cause lesser riders to turn around. He's a hard-core rider…

SPORT ATV TOOL KIT YOU MUST HAVE

In the last issue of Dirt Wheels we outlined the emergency tools and supplies that you should always have in a UTV. Since then we have attended the Rally on the Rocks in Moab Utah, and there we saw drivers with spare axles mounted to the roll cage. While a giant bag of tools and spares makes sense for a UTV, it makes far less sense on a sport ATV. Storage is meager and, in all likelihood, most of what you can carry in the way of spares and tools will be hanging from your body in a fanny pack or a backpack. It is possible to…
