By the staff of Dirt Wheels CT POLARIS RZR 4 DYNAMIX Allen Knowles is the owner of CT Racing, and he has managed something extraordinary. No, we aren’t talking about this cool four-seat desert monster he built. He’s managed to find a wife who still likes to get out and hit trails in a rowdy UTV. Roxanne can navigate, feed the crew, or drive the dually and the trailer. Even more, she can stand to be a passenger when “Crazy Al” is driving. We’ll admit, we will only ride with him when the alternative is walking—with…

Power with pleasure By the staff of Dirt Wheels We’ve spent a lot of time in the Can-Am Maverick 1000 since its release, and you possibly have read in past issues our opinions of the car. This time we wanted to tune up some of the Maverick’s soft spots and make the car great at destination-type off-road trips. The Can-Am Maverick X ds Turbo 1000R has a lot of what you need: good ride, lots of power, and a pleasantly ergonomic driver and passenger compartment. A lot of our destination trips are at high altitude, and that…

PROJECT: Honda 400X Budget Trail Machine

Honda’s 400EX—or 400X in this case—has been around since 1999, where we entered it in the Baja 1000 and set a new record for an ATV at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 33 seconds. At the time, it was the most venerable race quad around, but time and technology have relocated the 400X to the trail quad segment. Numerous changes over the years—to the plastic bodywork and the addition of a reverse gear, placing it against a Yamaha YFZ450 in our April 2012 issue—showed it’s still not ready to die out. For that test, we installed an L.A.…

PROJECT ATV: Honda TRX450R Rat Rod Quad

The “rat rod” culture has been around since the ’50s. Back then, guys would take a worn-down car from the early 1900s to 1950s, chop and lower it, remove the fenders and add some serious horsepower, along with a couple of flashy parts. The rusty remnants of years of abuse and weathering on the body usually remain. There are several variations of the styles of rat rods depending on the owner or builder of the car. Some of the more notable trendsetters of the rat rod movement would be artists like Von Dutch for his Flying Eye…
