PROJECT UPDATE #1: 2019 Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity

We are taking a 2019 Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity and upgrading it to handle the abuse of rock crawling and desert driving. Parts from companies like BFD Off-Road, WARN, Assault Ind. and more are finding their home on this impressive build.

TOP PROJECT ATVs

The Dirt Wheels crew will ride a box-stock quad for awhile, but then we start thinking about ways to improve its performance. Building project quads is a way of life for us. Here is a list of some that made it into the Dirt Wheels Project Quad Hall of Fame. Click on the links above each picture to go straight to the articles. PROJECT RAPTOR 734 GETS 76 HP!

We like to cover the spectrum of affordability with our projects. Some, like our Honda 400X, are affordable, easy and very effective. For our project Raptor, however, we decided to not constrain the project with a budget but rather shoot for the stars. With the Raptor in pieces in Trinity’s shop, we compiled some other parts to install for part one of the project Raptor build. If you’ve been keeping up with our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dirtwheelsmag, you will recall some of the build pictures and…

PROJECT: Yamaha Turbo Raptor 700

Yamaha’s Raptor 700 is a force to be reckoned with in the world of sport quads. It is the top big-bore sport quad around and is the last one that is still being manufactured today. The Raptor 700 is fast in stock trim, but Roger Kirkpatrick from Humboldt Motorsports was tasked with taking a 2007 Raptor and turning it into a mean sand-slinging machine. Bolting on parts to increase the machine’s handling and performance capabilities was very important with this build, mainly because a very powerful turbo system was about to be…

PROJECT ATV: Fast Yamaha Raptor 700

We believe the R&D department at Yamaha sent a team of scientists back in time to capture one of the most ferocious dinosaurs around, the Raptor. It was fast, powerful and aggressive, just like the Raptor 700R, so it would make sense that they somehow mechanically enhanced the dinosaur with four wheels and produced it as one of the most iconic sport ATVs around. In terms of power and performance, you can’t easily beat a Yamaha Raptor 700R. The only way to do so is, well, to make it better by bolting on aftermarket…

BUYER’S GUIDE: 2016 Sport ATVs

Another year has passed, which means new and exciting ATV models have hit the market. Nowadays, these machines are coming with more features at better price points. Power steering is becoming a standard feature on a lot of new machines, which is a nice thing to have. The 4x4 market is gaining new models every year, which is a major plus; unfortunately, the sport-quad side of things is beginning to dwindle. There are less offerings of sport ATVs than we have seen in a long time. Yamaha’s Raptor 250 and 125 have become more…

UTV TEST: 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000 & 1000-5

As the UTV market continues to flourish with an abundance of machines that have new and exciting features, Honda released their 2016 Pioneer 1000 and 1000-5. Honda set a new benchmark in the recreational utility class with this machine. The one standalone feature is the fully automatic, six-speed, dual-clutch transmission that has manual paddle-shift capabilities. No other UTV on the market carries a transmission like this, and that is just the tip of the iceberg for Honda’s newest member of the family. POWERPLANT…

ATV TEST: 2016 Honda Rincon 4×4

Honda’s flagship Rincon has only seen one major improvement in its life, and that was back in 2006. In that model year the liquid-cooled engine mated to a three-speed transmission, increased from a 650cc mill up to a whopping 675cc. In addition, EFI was also added. In total those cc numbers do seem small, but for the 90 percent of 4x4 riders out there, speed is not a number-one priority. However, smooth riding, getting the job done and power are. Furthermore, the 65-mph top speed this machine is capable of hitting is plenty…

PRODUCT TEST: Yamaha Raptor 700 Dual Exhaust

When upgrading the exhaust on your machine, there are a lot of options out there—from slip-on systems to full systems and even dual-exhaust systems. We recently got our hands on a dual exhaust from Barker’s Performance to install on a 2015 Yamaha Raptor 700. The muffler is made of 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum and comes standard in a brushed aluminum finish. INSTALL To start with the install of the new exhaust system, we had to remove the stock exhaust and header. After removing the stock system, we started with test…

PROJECT ATV: Polaris Sportsman 1000 Build

Lately we have featured some highly modified 4x4s built for racing the woods and in the mud. These are the extremes of what can be done with a big budget and the set direction for building up your machine. We want to flip the coin and mildly tune up our Polaris Sportsman 1000 4x4 and show how some simple products can improve your quad. Since we started out with one of the fastest 4x4 machines, we didn’t have to mess with engine performance. Instead, we added creature comforts, changed the tires and equipped it for long rides…

SHOOTOUT: Walsh Hybrid Suzuki LT500 vs. Honda CRF450R

What happens when you take a modern race chassis and stuff the most powerful ATV engine ever produced inside? A Suzuki dream machine is born. You see, the chassis kits Walsh Race Craft build are based on the legendary Suzuki LT-R450 Quadracer roller and is the top choice of any open-class racer today. Walsh components are found on top racers in both GNCC and AMA ATV MX racing, under names like Chris Borich and Chad Wienen who are current champions of the sport. That powerful engine is not a modern four-stroke, but a…

PROJECT ATV: Supermoto Suzuki LT-R450

ATV's where obviously designed to be off-road machines that can tackle all types of terrain. If you have ever ridden your quad on the asphalt or concrete then you know how horribly an ATV handles on the hard stuff. However, that doesn't stop riders from turning their machines into road worthy warriors like this radical Supermoto Suzuki LT-R450. TRACTION ACTION Maxxis has two different compounds of the flat track tires. Ultra Soft is for dirt riding, and Medium Soft is for very hardpacked or blue-grooved dirt or…
