BUYER’S GUIDE: 2016 Youth ATVs

Another year has passed, which means new and exciting ATV models have hit the market. Nowadays, these machines are coming with more features at better price points. Power steering is becoming a standard feature on a lot of new machines, which is a nice thing to have. The 4x4 market is gaining new models every year, which is a major plus; unfortunately, the sport-quad side of things is beginning to dwindle. There are less offerings of sport ATVs than we have seen in a long time. Yamaha’s Raptor 250 and 125 have become more…

WHEN ATCs RULED THE TRACK

WHEN ATCs RULED THE TRACK Editor’s note: In nearly every issue we feature a cool project or race machine built by a reader, engine builder or a top pro racer. Some of those projects have been assembled by the legendary Mickey Dunlap and his company, Four Stroke Tech. Not only has Mickey been a top engine and machine builder for decades, he was an accomplished racer. Mickey was the number-one rider way back when factory salaries first hit the ATV scene and machines barely had suspension. He dominated the ultra-popular, 200cc…

SHOOTOUT UTV: Arctic Cat Sport 700 vs. Kawasaki Teryx 800 vs. Polaris RZR S 900 vs. Yamaha Wolverine 700

The mid-sized performance UTV category is growing. In the last year, both Yamaha and Arctic Cat developed machines to go against the Polaris RZR S. Unfortunately for them, Polaris upped the cc on the RZR S to 875cc, making it even faster. Furthermore, Kawasaki has increased the power and suspension action of the Teryx to try and keep up. We see this category as a group of machines in the $15,000 price range that still needs to fit on 60-inch-wide trails, be hauled in the back of a pickup, and not necessarily used for work.…

UTV SHOOTOUT: Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT vs. Polaris Ranger XP 900

If you are in the market for a high-quality UTV that needs to be just as capable doing everyday chores as it is fun on the trail, there’s a lot to choose from. You probably want a dump bed rather than a small cargo rack, and you probably want a multi-passenger machine rather than a single-seater. In this class of sport utility machines, there are a lot of choices from companies like John Deere, Yamaha and Honda. But, two machines we have been even more impressed with since their release are the Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT and the…

2015 High Lifter Quadna Mud Nationals!

The 2015 Quadna Mud Nationals was a blast! Putting aside the mud bog racing, an obstacle course race, sled pulls, kids foot race up Quadna Mtn and more was involved in the family fun event. High Lifter puts on great race and entertainment for everyone. There was a live band in the evenings, food, and a vendor row to check out in between the races. Over 5000 people showed up with their ATVs and UTVs to play in the mud and on the trails around Quadna Mtn. You don't have to have anything but your normal machines to go have a…

SHOOTOUT: Sport quad 450 Duner Shootout

Back in the June issue we brought you a shootout using these same three quads. In that test we took them for a day of riding in the tight trails. We wanted to see if the latest Yamaha YFZ450R would perform well against its narrower competitors, the Honda and Kawasaki 450s. Surprisingly, we didn’t have any issues with the slightly wider Yamaha on the tight trails. It turned out, its suspension and handling were so much better than the other two, it was the top choice of all our test riders. In fact, we liked it much better…

ATV TEST: Racing 450 Shootout

This is the golden age for performance quads. Ten years ago, we were patching up old two-strokes from an earlier era, hoping to get them through each week while the manufacturers virtually ignored the high-end sport market. Now we have at least six makers offering state-of-the-art 450 sport quads with performance we could only dream of in the past. There have never been so many choices, especially for the weekend racer. Even so, the ready-to-race ATV isn’t quite here. Government regulations, liability concerns and…
