WHERE IS THE ALL-NEW HONDA TRX450R?!

Take our 2021 readers survey for a chance to fin free tires and wheels. WHERE IS THE ALL-NEW HONDA TRX450R?! We can't hide the truth. Our beloved sport ATV market has been taken over by roll cage-equipped machines. Do we want to stick our noses up at the UTV market? Of course not! Those machines are a blast to drive and get more people included in our favorite hobby: off-roading. But, if we are honest, we are very bummed out that the sport ATV market has fallen off the radar of most major manufacturers. In…

TUESDAY TREAD: GBC KANATI MONGREL

Rock and roll, and rolling rocks By the staff of Dirt Wheels When we first saw the GBC Kanati Mongrel tires in action, we wondered if they were an automotive tire adapted to UTV use. Nope, they are designed for ATVs and UTVs. When a tire company is building a tire for original equipment, they have a lot of demands to meet. It must offer traction in an extremely wide range of terrain. The tread should clean well in mud yet not be destroyed easily in rocks. The suspension department will want the tire to be as light…

GEAR GRINDER: ORI STRUTS

Use nitrogen for your UTV springs By the staff of Dirt Wheels Mark and Marie Jensen used their passion for design and off-road racing and Mark’s nearly 40 years of machining, engineering and ISO 9000 global-standard quality-control experience to fabricate their first suspension systems. They later incorporated ORI Struts as a company in 2002. Mark gained his appreciation for precision engineering as a Honda motorcycle mechanic, and later as a machinist before completing formal studies in manufacturing engineering. He…

UTV FIRST RIDE: POLARIS ACE 900 XC

This Ace is wild! By the staff of Dirt Wheels LINK TO ACE 900 XC VIDEO: WATCH NOW! We may have mentioned before that one of our industry friends has quipped that the Polaris Ace is for UTV enthusiasts who don’t have any friends. With the Ace 900 XC, your friends are very lucky you don’t have room for them. The 900 XC mixes wild performance with a laugh-factory fun factor. It allows (and encourages) you to drive with speed and aggressiveness that is simply not compatible with the image and capabilities of…

PROJECT HONDA TRX450R: BACK TO THE FUTURE

A time-traveling DeLorean-inspired desert dasher By the staff of Dirt Wheels Think back to the 1980s if you can. And if you can’t, then you’ll surely recognize the futuristic film franchises that appeared during this time and still remain part of the fabric of our lives today—from cyborgs bent on creating mass destruction to a battle royal between the Force and the Dark Side. It was an epic time for sci-fi, as everyone was starting to get a glimpse into the future. One of the most iconic films…

PROJECT: Coastal Racing Yamaha YFZ450

The most prestigious woods race series for quads is the GNCC series. These are races that last a minimum of two full hours through the woods. At the start of the two hours the course is far from pristine. Many events are run on trails that are used in other races, and the Pro ATV class runs in the afternoon race, so literally hundreds of quads have already pounded the course before these guys even start. The engines are run very hard, since the entire race is composed of relatively short full-throttle bursts followed by…

UTV TEST: 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000 & 1000-5

As the UTV market continues to flourish with an abundance of machines that have new and exciting features, Honda released their 2016 Pioneer 1000 and 1000-5. Honda set a new benchmark in the recreational utility class with this machine. The one standalone feature is the fully automatic, six-speed, dual-clutch transmission that has manual paddle-shift capabilities. No other UTV on the market carries a transmission like this, and that is just the tip of the iceberg for Honda’s newest member of the family. POWERPLANT…

ATV TEST: 2016 Honda Rincon 4×4

Honda’s flagship Rincon has only seen one major improvement in its life, and that was back in 2006. In that model year the liquid-cooled engine mated to a three-speed transmission, increased from a 650cc mill up to a whopping 675cc. In addition, EFI was also added. In total those cc numbers do seem small, but for the 90 percent of 4x4 riders out there, speed is not a number-one priority. However, smooth riding, getting the job done and power are. Furthermore, the 65-mph top speed this machine is capable of hitting is plenty…

PROJECT ATV: Kymco 4×4 Racer

Racing is an expensive proposition. It seems like no matter what class you run, you are always racing against guys with a bigger budget. Well, there is a group of guys in the GNCC series who are trying to build up the 4x4 Lites class in hopes of keeping it a level playing field without breaking the bank and attracting more riders to the sport. 4X4 LITES This class in the GNCC series was aimed to get local riders attracted to the sport at all the different venues the series stops at every two weeks. Chances are, within a…
