ATV TEST: 2015 Yamaha YFZ450R Special Edition

Yamaha’s YFZ450R is one impressive sport ATV right out of the box. The engine is powerful, the suspension outperforms all other stock sport quad suspensions, and the overall performance of the machine is very satisfying. Without question, Yamaha continues to upgrade this quad each year, and the 2015 YFZ450R Special Edition was not left out of that process. The SE comes with a radical color combination, mating a red frame with black and white plastic. PLENTY OF PONIES From the factory, the YFZ450R has never left us…

PROJECT ATV: Attack of the Super Raptors

There are two cards that should be hanging from the handlebar of every Yamaha Raptor 250 in every showroom across the country. One should have a list of the things the Raptor is, and the other should have what the Raptor isn’t. Things the Raptor 250 is: Well-made, reliable, sporty, reasonably priced, incredibly fun. Thing the Raptor 250 isn’t: A racer. That isn’t to say you can’t race the little Raptor in stock form. People do it all the time. But if you do, you better be matched up against someone else with a stock…

HOP-UP TIPS: Pull more power out of your machine! Dyno testing

The aftermarket parts industry for ATVs and UTVs is continuing to grow, yet choosing the right performance products for your machine is not always a simple task. We decided to take a popular ATV in the sport quad category to the guys at Empire Industries for performance dyno testing. We started with Yamaha’s race-ready, fuel-injected YFZ450R in stock form and began adding popular, inexpensive, bolt-on parts to gain more engine horsepower. Installing aftermarket performance parts without knowing how and what they do to…

SHOOTOUT: 2008 Raptor 700 vs. Honda 700X

When we got the call that our Honda 700XX was ready for testing, we had just finished up our big-bore sport shootout. That contest featured the Polaris Outlaw 525, the KTM 525XC and Yamaha’s Raptor 700. The results were very close with the $7400 Raptor just edging out the 525 from KTM. So we decided to jump right into a shootout between that winning Raptor and Honda’s new $7900 700XX. The Raptor is powered by a big SOHC, liquid-cooled single cylinder four-stroke engine. It’s actual cc reading is a bit smaller than…

2015 High Lifter Quadna Mud Nationals!

The 2015 Quadna Mud Nationals was a blast! Putting aside the mud bog racing, an obstacle course race, sled pulls, kids foot race up Quadna Mtn and more was involved in the family fun event. High Lifter puts on great race and entertainment for everyone. There was a live band in the evenings, food, and a vendor row to check out in between the races. Over 5000 people showed up with their ATVs and UTVs to play in the mud and on the trails around Quadna Mtn. You don't have to have anything but your normal machines to go have a…

SHOOTOUT: Sport quad 450 Duner Shootout

Back in the June issue we brought you a shootout using these same three quads. In that test we took them for a day of riding in the tight trails. We wanted to see if the latest Yamaha YFZ450R would perform well against its narrower competitors, the Honda and Kawasaki 450s. Surprisingly, we didn’t have any issues with the slightly wider Yamaha on the tight trails. It turned out, its suspension and handling were so much better than the other two, it was the top choice of all our test riders. In fact, we liked it much better…

UTV TEST: First Test – 2016 Yamaha Wolverine R-Spec 700

Yes, we have heard it a million times: when is Honda or Yamaha going to jump into the high-performance UTV market? Well, Yamaha has just taken their first step in getting back into the game they basically spawned over a decade ago. No, the new Wolverine is not in direct competition with the Polaris RZR XP 1000 or Can-Am Maverick, but it could give the RZR 900 or Arctic Cat Sport 700 a run for their money. What the Wolverine is for sure is new and exciting. Since it does not have a dump bed, we have to call it a sport model…

ATV TEST: Racing 450 Shootout

This is the golden age for performance quads. Ten years ago, we were patching up old two-strokes from an earlier era, hoping to get them through each week while the manufacturers virtually ignored the high-end sport market. Now we have at least six makers offering state-of-the-art 450 sport quads with performance we could only dream of in the past. There have never been so many choices, especially for the weekend racer. Even so, the ready-to-race ATV isn’t quite here. Government regulations, liability concerns and…
