2024 YOUTH UTV BUYER’S GUIDE

Youth UTVs are getting more sophisticated and technologically savvy for grooming young UTV drivers while maintaining safety and parental control, with Polaris’ RZR 200 leading the way via its Ride Command app. Parents can control the RZR’s speed and set boundaries with their phone, and Helmet Aware technology cuts the ignition if the helmet isn’t being worn. All models seen here have electronic or mechanical speed or throttle limiters so that parents can tune engine output for their child’s skill level, plus they have protective cages and daytime running lights for safety. These youth-sized UTVs can also accommodate larger riders, and improving performance levels also increases the fun. Hisun’s Strike 250R and Polaris’ RZR 200, which replaced the RZR 170, are the most successful in youth UTV racing, and Kayo is entering the youth UTV market with its S200.

2024 YOUTH UTV BUYER’S GUIDE

HISUN SECTOR 250

Hisun’s Sector 250 is a youth-sized recreation utility machine that’s large enough for adults to enjoy. Its working dump bed also lets it help with hauling chores. A 229cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine and dual-range transmission give it more power and speed than smaller youth UTVs. Fuel injection also ensures starting in any weather. Double-A-arm front suspension with a sway bar gives the Sector 250 sure, stable cornering. It’s also loaded with big-UTV features like a windshield, roof, mirrors, alloy wheels, turn signals, horn, 2,500-pound winch, speedometer and tachometer. A mechanical speed limiter lets parents adjust the Sector 250’s performance to match the skill of learning riders.

HISUN STRIKE 250R

The Hisun Strike 250R sport UTV powered by a 229cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine. Fuel injection provides easy starts in cold or hot weather. With more room and power than most smaller youth UTVs, adults can enjoy this machine with their kids. The dual-range automatic transmission increases this machine’s pulling power and speed. Double-A-arm front suspension with a sway bar gives the Strike 250R sure, steady cornering. Standard equipment includes doors, a roof, slide-adjust seats, mirrors, aluminum wheels, a winch, turn signals, horn and speedometer. A mechanical speed limiter lets parents adjust the Strike 250R’s performance to match the skill of learning riders. 2024 YOUTH UTV BUYER’S GUIDE

KAYO S200

Kayo has been manufacturing youth ATVs for more than a decade. New for 2024, Kayo enters the youth SxS market with its S200 designed for kids 10 and older, and the S200 looks like it’ll outperform most existing youth UTVs. Width is 10 inches wider than the RZR 200 with dual-A-arm front suspension and Trophy Truck-like front-facing tie-rods with rack-and-pinion steering. Wheelbase is 74.8 inches, ground clearance is 9.1 inches, front travel is 5.1 inches, and rear travel is 5.9 inches. It has 1.25-inch by 0.095-inch tubing for its six-point roll cage and a rear differential and CV axles instead of chain and sprockets for final drive and more ground clearance. Power is provided by a 196cc air- and oil-cooled, SOHC, single-cylinder engine mounted sideways behind the seats for better weight distribution and a CVT with dual shoulder-high snorkels. Horsepower is 13.41; the Hisun Strike 250R puts out 16.09, while the RZR 200 has 11.1.

Racy bucket seats have six-position adjustment (4 inches) and four-point harnesses, allowing parents to fit in the spacious cabin. An over-molded 13.8-inch steering wheel has universal six-bolt pattern and adjustable five-position tilt. A digital gauge rides in the center of the dash, and the oil cooler sits behind and between the seats. The S200 has four LED headlights and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes with 6.9-inch front rotors and 8.3-inch rear rotor, and steel wheels have a 4x110mm pattern like the RZR 200. A roof is standard, as is a trailer hitch, and the passenger grab bar is padded. The S200 has an adjustable throttle limiter, safety flag and LED taillight.

The Buck 250 has a fuel-injected, 12-horsepower, 177cc engine for effortless starting in any weather. It has hydraulic disc brakes with perforated front rotors and a single rear rotor, and there is a parking brake on the well-appointed dash. The RZR’s larger fuel-injected engine provides easy starting in any weather and fuss-free performance. The tilt-adjustable steering wheel and adjustable driver’s seat suits a wide range of driver sizes. RZR-inspired styling and performance give the 200 an authentic UTV look and feel, and it even comes with a digital instrument panel like bigger RZRs. The 200 comes with class-leading 24-inch tires, LED running lights and taillight, an adjustable throttle limiter, safety flag, two helmets, and an instructional DVD. New for 2024, RZR 200s come in Storm Grey with black and red graphics, and Polaris offered a 2023 1/2 Troy Lee Designs Edition RZR 200 for $7,499.

POLARIS RANGER 150

The Ranger 150 UTV has the same safety technology as the RZR 200. Parents can control startup with a key or password, and top speed, location tracking, and geo-fencing through the Ride Command app. Geo-fencing cuts speed if the vehicle goes outside boundaries set by parents. The Ranger 150 also comes with a safety flag, two helmets and an instructional DVD. This utility-styled youth machine has a fuel-injected, 150cc, air-cooled engine for easy starts in any weather, a cargo bed that can carry 50 pounds, and big-machine features like tilt-adjustable steering and an adjustable seat.

The SSR SRU170RS is loaded with useful standard features, and it has enough room for larger kids or adults who want to join their young driver. You get an LED light bar, front bumper, cast-aluminum wheels, spare tire carrier with spare tire, rock rails, side mirrors, daytime-running lights, side nets and a whip flag. The SSR SRU170RS also has a real speedometer, a gas gauge and a 12-volt power port. A fabric roof is standard, the seats are comfortable, the driver’s seat slides to adjust, and the steering wheel tilt is adjustable.
