2025 CAN-AM OUTLANDER 850/1000R – EVERYTHING CHANGED!

A new 101-horsepower engine, new chassis, extended suspension travel, and more

In early 2023, I got my first ride on the all-new (at the time) Outlander XT 700 and was way more impressed than expected. An all-new chassis design did away with the rear torsional trailing arm independent rear suspension design for what appeared to be a traditional A-arm setup—but it worked even better! It was more stable, tracked straight, cornered fantastically, and even absorbed the hardest hits we could throw at it. Before the first day was over, a few other editors in the ATV media and I were already predicting that this style chassis would make its way to the larger Outlander 850 and 1000R lines. We were right. In fact, the 500, 700, 850 and 1000 share the same frame. However, additional changes went far beyond our expectations. Here’s what we know so far.

ENGINE & DRIVE

The 2025 Outlander 1000R is the first factory-built ATV to cross into triple-digit horsepower with an all-new Rotax engine. The 2024 1000R used a 976cc Rotax V-twin producing 91 horsepower and 66 lb-ft of torque. The all-new 2025 1000R’s 999cc DOHC V-twin produces 101 horsepower and 69 lb-ft of torque. Likewise, the Outlander 850 also uses the same 999cc displacement top end as the 1000R but with different ECU settings, producing 82 horsepower and 66 lb-ft of torque compared to 78 horsepower from the 2024 engine. We know this displacement game is confusing, as Can-Am did the same thing with the Outlander 500 and 700 using the same 650cc engine. The differences are mostly electronic, and using the same engine reduces supply chain and tooling costs.

The CVT is also newwith the latest pDrive primary clutch, paired with a new, dual-roller-driven pulley, which Can-Am claims offers instant response and enhanced reliability.

Work, Standard, and Sport ride modes are selectable on the dash display for both the 850 and 1000R. The CVT intake has also been relocated to a higher location to prevent water intake, most likely just ahead of the dash like that of the Outlander 700/500. The 1000R XT trim and up get the upgraded and fully lockable Visco-4Lok front differential rather than the standard Visco-Lok auto-locker from 2024.

The rear trailing arm suspension has been replaced with control arms. Front and rear suspensio offer more clearance and the same forward facing attack angle that we like on the Outlander 500 and 700.

SUSPENSION

As already mentioned, the rear trailing arms have been replaced with a more traditional control arm, but the rear lower arms are huge, with the front mount just behind the back of the engine and the rear mount behind the rear differential. The front and rear arms get the same forward-facing attack angle, a feature we raved about on the XT 700. This design improves straightforward tracking and cornering with better shock absorption. The ride is more predictable and stable at any speed, lending more rider confidence to the Outlander’s capability.

The 2025 Outlander 850/1000R frame shares the same part number with the Outlander 500/700 frame.

The 2025 model is also a half-inch wider, and while that may not refer to the actual track width, the 2025 Outlander did gain more suspension travel and ground clearance. Front suspension travel increased from 9.2 inches to 10.8 inches, and rear travel increased from 9.9 inches to 12 inches. The differences are huge and contribute to an extra half-inch of ground clearance.

Outlander 1000R nodels now have dual rear disc brakes.

BRAKES

All Outlander 850 models have dual hydraulic disc brakes with twin-piston calipers up front and a single disc brake with a dual-piston caliper at the rear. All 1000R models get hydraulic disc brakes with dual-piston calipers on all four wheels.

DIMENSIONS

The wheelbase of the single-seat and MAX two-seat Outlanders increased by 1.8 inches, which may not seem like much but goes a long way toward straight-line stability at higher speeds, especially in rougher terrain. This was to be expected with an ATV that now makes higher horsepower.

According to Can-Am, the dry weight increased by over 100 pounds, although the 2025 specs list the 850 and 1000R at 1,000 pounds. We’ll be sure to get one on our vehicle scale as soon as we receive a long-term test unit, but needless to say, it’s a heavy beast, especially with all fluids and a full 5.1-gallon fuel tank (down slightly from 5.4 gallons in 2024).

The 2024 Outlander XT 1000R measured 86 inches in length, 48 inches in width, and 49.5 inches in height. The 2025 Outlander XT 1000R is larger, measuring 88.4 inches in length, 48.5 inches in width, and 49 inches in height. Can-Am tells us the width stretches to nearly 50 inches when the shocks are fully compressed. The seat height has increased by just over three inches, so you’ll sit higher on the saddle.

CAPACITIES

The 2025 Outlander has a higher rack capacity of 120 pounds on the front rack and 240 pounds on the rear. That’s a combined increase of 60 pounds. Towing has also increased by 180 pounds with 1,830 pounds max towing via a standard 2-inch hitch receiver. Sealed storage has almost doubled from 5.7 to 10.6 gallons – similar to storage expansions made to the Outlander 500/700.
