Can-Am Maverick X DS Turbo

Way back in the August issue, we brought you Can-Am’s 2015 model-year lineup. It was full of new ATVs and UTVs. However, there were a couple of special-edition Maverick versions that the guys at the factory were still putting the finishing touches on. Well, the wait was worth it. Can-Am dropped a bombshell on the UTV industry by announcing the first machine available with a factory-installed turbo, the Maverick X ds. Can-Am is no stranger to this technology, as they have several Ski-Doo snowmobiles and Sea-Doo watercraft that are turbocharged.

MAVERICK X DS TURBO
Along with changing the intake and exhaust system to facilitate the new Turbo, Can-Am also increased airflow to the belt, installed a quick-response clutch system and new rear suspension. The 976cc V-twin gets a boost of 20 peak horsepower thanks to the turbocharger. But in this case, it’s the increase in low-end and fast-building power that should put the passengers back into their seats with force. A single throttle body and dual injectors will still feed fuel to the mill, and twin mufflers will expel the gases.

From the outside, you can tell the difference between turbo models from non-turbo models, because there is a large inter-cooler box that is situated just between the passenger shoulders. This radiator-looking device cools the hot-exhaust-propelled air before it reenters the intake system.

BETTER SUSPENSION
We think the best thing about this new Maverick is the suspension system. Up front it gets an extra inch of travel, and at the rear it helps gain over 3 inches of wheelbase and 2 inches of wheel travel, which will improve the ride tremendously. Furthermore, all four shocks have added crossover rings for more precise tuning and internal bottom-out cups to soften the biggest hits. The new suspension is found on non-turbo models as well. The improvement in suspension alone should bring the Maverick neck and neck with the RZR XP 1000 in the rough stuff. By the time you read this, we will be in the middle of a shootout between the two machines, so stay tuned.
