IS A NEW YAMAHA ATV COMING SOON?

A NEW YAMAHA ATV? WE HOPE SO!

Recently updated patent drawings and information suggest Yamaha is preparing to enter the sport 4×4 segment with a machine gushing in new performance, innovation, and style. We first broke this story back in August with this link: https://dirtwheelsmag.com/is-yamaha-developing-a-twin-cylinder-sport-4×4-atv/

Since that time, we’ve seen a few patent updates, but this latest drop shows a more complete vehicle with sport-focused features and lines.

Above, we get a good look at a very flat seat and tank area, designed much like a sport ATV for more aggressive riding and body movement. You can also see the rear-leaning engine cylinder and head. In our August post, the drawings showed a parallel twin that looked identical to both the RMAX 1000 and Wolverine 850 UTV engines. We’re betting this is the 850-twin. Some of the text we read in the patent mentioned two tire sizes, with the largest being 30 inches.

Here we see fully-adjustable shocks with piggyback reservoirs at all four corners. Like the Grizzly 700, all four wheels get hydraulic disc brakes. The footwells/floor boards are also like nothing we’ve ever seen with an inclined foot surface toward the rear. Mud riders will likely appreciate this when navigating deep bogs with the nose in the air, and it should also be an advantage on steep hill ascents.

Notice the very narrow space at the front of the seat for freer movement with the legs. like a sport quad or dirt bike. This design will also add comfort whether standing or sitting on the seat. The seat also appears to be more sport focused with a raised padded cushion at the rear.

Here you can see the rear facing engine and how Yamaha achieved the more comfortable rider position. The fuel tank actually appears to sit low in the frame cradle with the EFI/fuel pump on top where a traditional fuel tank would be located. Low center of gravity looks to be a main goal with this design.

Fenders are much more sport focused with a little less splach protection. Foot wells look to be heavily reinforced. From this angle, width appears to be 50 inches or greater.

Compete belly skid protection looks to be standard equipment in this drawing. Front and long rear long-travel A-arms appear to have a forward facing attack angle for aggressive riding and higher speeds.

Electric power steering (EPS) is confirmed here, as are high-clearance front A-arms. Ground clearance should be 12-inches or more. Also, look at how the top of the shocks and compression adjusters are above the front fenders, perhaps making for quick adjustments without leaving the seat. In this photo and the one below we can confirm dual hand-brake controls for more precise brake control.

A large digital dash display can be seen here.

There’s plenty in this update to get excited about. Will Yamaha build it? They tell us “Yamaha patents many things that never see production.” That’s te corporate answer, but the grin on their faces suggest far more is coming… Stay tuned!
