WHY IS MY BIGHORN JERKY?

BIGHORN EXPLORER 550 QUESTIONS

A DIRT WHEELS FAN WRITES: “I purchased a leftover Bighorn 550 from Tractor Supply recently. I loved the price for what I was getting over a Honda Pioneer 700 with its larger cab and larger dump bed. But that love affair didn’t last very long! The machine is noisy and jerky. I can’t even hold a steady speed because of the jerkiness. Boss, did I make an expensive mistake? And are there fixes for the way this machine is acting?” – Terry Butcher, Oswego, NY

OUR PRO ANSWER: I hope that you are not expecting Honda fit and finish with your Bighorn. Two different companies at two different price points. And, yes, there are some easy fixes for your problems! The first is the jerkiness because that seems to be your number one complaint. There are two reasons, and here are the fixes. The drive belt is not the highest quality, and there are spots on it causing this jerkiness. As the belt wears with time, this will smooth out. Generally, by 50 miles this problem is eliminated.  The second is the gas pedal spring. Many find the spring to be too weak, causing your foot to bounce on the gas pedal as you go over bumps. If you fit a stronger spring, that pedal bounce will be reduced. To alleviate some of the cabin noise, I suggest you obtain some sound deadening mats and attach them to the inside of the engine cover, because you are sitting on top of the engine. The four most-popular sound-deadening mats are Fatmat, Noico, Kilmat and Dynamat. Here is an excellent guide to these four sound deadening products’ pros and cons: https://soundproofguide.com/fatmat-vs-kilmat-vs-noico-vs-dynamat/.
