NEW MODEL: 2024 POLARIS RANGER XD 1500 WITH STEELDRIVE CVT

Is this the toughest SxS on the planet? By the staff of Dirt Wheels

Polaris recently announced the largest utility side-by-side—not only in their lineup but in the industry. The Ranger XD 1500 features a Polaris-built, ProStar, 1500cc, triple-cylinder, gas-powered engine. It puts out a respectable 110 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. The power numbers have increased by over 30-percent compared to previous Ranger 1000 models.

However, what Polaris hopes will make this machine a true workhorse is its brand-new SteelDrive CVT transmission. Yes, you read that right, Polaris is borrowing the same technology that has been used in many compact automobiles for the last decade and installing it into the latest Ranger. Not only is Polaris after the pulling power of a steel CVT belt, they want durability and a long service life. According to Polaris, this transmission only requires a simple oil and filter change every 6,000 miles. Furthermore, the new 1500cc, three-cylinder engine can go 2000 miles between oil changes under normal usage.

This extreme-duty Ranger has impressive hauling and towing numbers, thanks to the powertrain mentioned above and an all-new chassis. Similar to the Xpedition, this chassis has a larger Pro-Fit ROPS connected to a beefy frame underneath and all-new suspension. Twelve inches of travel is found at all four corners through A-arms and is preload adjustable only. However, the rear shocks have dual mounting areas for even more hauling power. Speaking of that, Polaris claims this new model can haul up to 1,500 pounds in the cargo bed and tow up to 3,000 pounds—although below 10 mph. A new Tow/Haul mode will help the SteelDrive CVT stay in a lower gear ratio while it’s needed, but there is not a low gear to select.

The larger Ranger will come in handy for the hunting crowd. The Pursuit Camo is only available on the Premium model, and it’s a $1,000 add-on.

Stopping power has been increased with help from a vacuum booster system similar to what you would see on an automobile. Another never-before-seen feature is an air-filter service indicator. The resettable device allows you to visually see when intake pressure is reduced, meaning the air filter needs to be changed.

The interior appears to be as nice as or even better than the Xpedition. However, with the XD, the Crew model will seat six, and both front and rear passengers will get heat and A/C vents in the Northstar Edition. Heated seats can also be found in the Ultimate-trim XDs. Up front, a nice dash with various pockets and glove boxes will allow you to bring along what’s needed for a day on the job or on the trails. Furthermore, Ride Command+ is standard, and not only will help you find places to ride in your area, it can help you monitor your vehicle’s health, which can be read from your smartphone at any time.

2024 Polaris Ranger XD 1500 Premium.

Overall, the vehicle is longer than the Ranger XP 1000 by 17 inches, but the width still measures 64. That extra length provides more legroom inside the cabin and a larger dumping bed behind it. The dump bed is an extra 13 Inches longer than the XP’s dump box. And, this dump box is electronically assisted if you go for the Northstar Premium or Ultimate trim. The Premium model XDs ride on 29×14 tires, while the Ultimate and Northstar trims are equipped with 30×15 Kenda meats. Like the Xpedition, this machine will use five-lug unitized hubs in the back and standard five-lug hubs up front.

Polaris is taking a little longer to roll these new XD Rangers to dealers. And what we have been told, the first order has already sold out, so if you are interested in getting in on the next batch, go put a deposit down now.

Just in time for winter, Polaris is offering a 7-foot-wide snow plow that mounts right to the front of the XD 1500. Say goodbye to the snow shovel.
