2021 CAN-AM MAVERICK X3 X rs TURBO RR WITH SMART-SHOX
E-shocks make it to the Can-Am brand with more features By the staff of Dirt Wheels
NEW MODELS:
For 2021 Can-Am has followed suit behind Polaris and Honda by offering their top-of-the-line $28,299 two-seat and $32,099 four-seat Maverick X3s with what they call Smart-Shox, a semi-active suspension you can adjust on the fly from inside the cockpit. The shocks are built by Fox and have the same travel as previous X3 models. The Smart-Shox upgrade is only available in the wider X rs trim. For now, it’s not available in the rc or base models.
FOX SMART-SHOX
Smart-Shox will come with a $1700 price premium over non-Smart-Shox-equipped X3 X rs machines and only come in the new Desert Tan/Carbon Black/Red or Triple Black color choices.
NEW MODELS:
This technology works by using nine different sensors to track things like throttle position, wheel speed, suspension arm movement, yaw, pitch, and roll to calculate how much compression and rebound damping a shock should have at any given millisecond. The driver can adjust the system via a three-position toggle switch on the dash from the comfort (soft) to sport and sport plus (firm). Other than that switch, there is no indication or action screen telling you what the shocks are doing like in the Polaris system.
Unlike Polaris’ Fox Dynamix shocks and Honda’s Fox Live Valve, these are adjusted internally and control both compression and rebound simultaneously. So whether you want a plush ride or bottom-out protection, Can-Am claims you will have both.
MORE CHANGES
NEW MODELS:
Other than the added 19 pounds of weight the sensors and other electronics add, the car is basically the same structurally. Can-Am did make two additional improvements. The CVT intake tube has been redesigned to reduce noise by 4 decibels at 5200 rpm. Furthermore, the 650-watt charging magneto has been upgraded to an 850-watt unit that will keep up with the demands of the electronically monitored and controlled shocks. The extra juice will also help power Can-Am’s new accessory audio roof that was also released recently.
