Back in 2001 Honda was selling 400EX sport quads as fast and they could make them. It was an extremely popular machine and it seemed like every body had one. The number one thing on their minds was to make these Hondas even better. Or, more to the point, how to make them faster. That was what the Dirt Wheels crew did for a living and an aftermarket pipe was always the first thing we bolted on to a given quad.

“Which pipe is best?” is a question we constantly got from our readers, so we said. “Hey, why not do a shootoutout of all the pipes for a Honda 400EX?” And, that’s we did in our March 2001 issue. We ran each one on a dyno and recorded the numbers for all to see. You can see a reprint of that famous article below. The information is still relevant if you happen to own a 400EX today.

So, study the dyno charts and see which one looks best to you. Also, you should note that some of those companies are no longer in business today. However, FMF and CT Racing are still going strong and they rated at the top of this shootout.

When we run these “Blast from the Past” reprint articles, people tell us how much they enjoy seeing the old advertisements from companies back then. They do bring back fond memories from our younger days. And, they’re also educational for kids today who don’t realize how cool things were back then.
